Job Description

TRAFFIC & SIGN MAINTENANCE
The Opportunity Perform the preparation and installation activities involved with installing and maintaining the City's Street signs.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the direction of the Superintendent of the Streets & Sanitation Division or Foreman
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Often supervises seasonal or temporary employees, as assigned.
RESPONSIBILITIES
An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential duties: (These examples include of the duties which the employee may be expected to perform.)
  • Constructs, paints, letters, erects, repairs, cleans, and replaces traffic, street name, special event and other signs. Maintains required signage to State & Local standards.
  • Lays out and paints pavement markings, including crosswalks, parking, curbs and school markings. Maintains required markings to State & Local standards.
  • Prepares seasonal work plans for necessary work; works with supervisor to schedule crews to accomplish tasks.
  • Letters trucks and equipment, as required.
  • Designs and sets up lane closures, detours, and similar safety measures for construction, repair and maintenance work, and special events that complies with the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
  • Maintains and repairs temporary and permanent traffic control devices, as well as maintains records and inventory regarding all the City's traffic control signs.
  • Performs duties of an Equipment Operator, Truck Driver, or Laborer as required.
  • Performs routine preventive maintenance tasks such as checking filters and fluid levels for gas and diesel-powered vehicles, hydraulic systems, small engines, and equipment as assigned.
  • Accurately records activity, labor, and equipment time on time cards, in keeping with departmental policies. Records information related to vehicle usage, equipment, maintenance, work assignments and other activities.
  • Adheres to established safety policies and procedures and participates in safety instruction and programming.
  • Performs related work as required.
PREFERRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and ability (KSA's) required.   • Ability to become familiar with the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices standards for traffic signage and pavement marking, and to correctly apply these standards, often with little or no supervision.
  • Ability to operate a computer and associated programs, GPS, Roadsoft Software and computerized sign-making machine, common power tools, and pavement painter.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and the public.
  • Experience in performing spray-painting operations.
  • Must be willing to work overtime and off-hours shifts in scheduled and emergency situations.
Requirements Must be at least 18 years of age. A valid Michigan Driver's license with CDL class A endorsement and valid medical card or the ability to obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within 6 months. High school diploma or equivalent Ability to pass a background check and pre-employment screening. Ability to obtain International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Work Zone Temporary Traffic Control Technician Certification within 6 months. IMSA Signs and Pavement Markings Technician 1 Certification, within 2 years.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 60 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include peripheral vision, and depth perception.
WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and/or heavy equipment and all types of outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, and grease and oil from equipment. The employee is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals, sharp or otherwise dangerous instruments or equipment, and vibration. The noise level is usually moderate to loud.
