Under the general supervision of the Parks & Grounds Supervisor, the employee will perform a variety of tasks involving semi-skilled equipment operation and landscaping tasks in the maintenance of various grounds owned and/or operated by the Town. Grounds maintenance includes, but not limited to, mowing, planting, edging, trimming, blowing of leaves/pine straw, mulching, and watering and trash removal. Also includes assisting with the spraying of chemicals and repairs of sprinkler systems, the cleaning and routine maintenance of equipment and vehicles. The position also consists of preparation of ball fields, set-up, and cleaning
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Mows and maintains grounds around Town parks, outparcels, open areas, cemetery and Town buildings as deemed necessary Prunes trees and shrubberies, plants, waters, seeds and fertilizes grass, trees and flowers Sprays herbicides and pesticides and other chemicals; blows, rakes and picks up leaves and trash Assists with maintenance and repair of ball fields and grounds; maintains irrigation systems; dig trenches for water lines, lay and cover lines and pack down with dirt; repairs or replace sprinkler heads Drives truck to and from worksites; hauls supplies, equipment, materials and transports plants Performs a variety of extensive cultural practices to turf such as; verticutting, fertilizing aerating and top dressing ball fields Responsible for assisting in identifying turf diseases, funguses, inspect/pest control and nutrient deficiencies Calibrate sprayers, push spreaders, drop spreaders, top dressers, and tractor attachments for seed, sand and fertilizers (granular and liquid) Assists in the removal of leaves and mulching of plant and flower beds as well as trail maintenance on park properties Performs routine maintenance and replacement on machinery, equipment and/or vehicles Loads and unloads supplies, equipment and materials Drag ball fields during playing seasons and responsible for creating new layouts for Athletic fields and maintaining current multi-purpose filed activities such as, but not limited to; marking and painting soccer, lacrosse, rugby and football fields using paint machine and aerosol paint Maintain playground equipment and surfacing for safety and aesthetic purposes and perform weekly park and playground inspections based on established checklist Perform routine maintenance for dog park operations such as checking fence lines, water bowls, surfacing and waste and/trash removal Maintains nature walking trails throughout parks including disc golf course trail During inclement weather assist in clean up; cuts up and loads tree limbs and other debris Operates a variety of equipment power tools, lawn mowers, chain saws, weed eaters, sprayers, and hand saws Participates in buildings maintenance tasks at various recreation facilities and parks Cleans and stocks restrooms and provides maintenance and repairs for the facilities Attend training workshops and classes related to job duties Performs related duties as needed
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Working knowledge of tools, materials and methods used in unskilled and semi-skilled grounds maintenance work; Working knowledge of irrigation systems and methods to replace and repair lines and sprinkler heads; Knowledge of landscape architecture and general construction; Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; Knowledge of spraying and fertilization programs; Working knowledge of safety precautions applicable to the duties of the class; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Town employees, outside Town agencies and organizations, and the general public; Ability to analyze information and make recommendations
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Must have a high school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent and one to two years of experience in the unskilled and semi-skilled grounds and landscaping maintenance work or a combination of experience and/or education (including minimum education requirements); a two year Associates degree in turf or horticulture is preferred
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Must have either a valid North Carolina or South Carolina's driver's license and be able to maintain a safe driving record Must obtain a core and ornamental and turf pesticide license within 9 months of employment Must keep all pesticide and other licenses up to date as required for the position
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Must be able to perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing and repetitive motions Must be able to perform heavy work and manual labor exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects Must possess the visual acuity to perform mechanical or skilled trade tasks of a non-repetitive nature such inspections, landscaping, operate equipment and machines Must be able to work in environmental conditions that require both inside and outside work Must be able to work in conditions that are subject to contact with potentially infectious bodily fluids
