Job Summary The Preventative MaintenanceTechnician is responsible for the inspection, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of diesel-powered fleet vehicles and heavy equipment used to support sawmill operations. This position also assists with general plant maintenance and millwright activities as needed. The position helps ensure equipment, machinery, and facilities are safe, reliable, properly maintained, and available to support daily operations. Work Schedule This is a full-time position with standard operating hours of 6:00 AM-4:00 PM. Work hours may vary based on production demands, maintenance requirements, and project needs. Overtime, including weekends, may be required to support equipment maintenance and operational needs. Duties and Responsibilities Perform scheduled preventive maintenance on diesel-powered fleet vehicles and heavy equipment, including loaders, skidders, yard trucks, forklifts, and other mobile equipment. Inspect equipment and identify worn, damaged, or malfunctioning components requiring repair or replacement. Diagnose and repair diesel engines, transmissions, drivetrains, braking systems, fuel systems, and related mechanical components. Troubleshoot and repair hydraulic, electrical, and electronic systems. Respond to equipment breakdowns and perform repairs in a timely manner to minimize disruption to operations. Coordinate with equipment operators and supervisors regarding equipment condition, maintenance needs, and repair priorities. Maintain accurate maintenance records, service logs, inspection reports, and repair documentation. Maintain an organized inventory of commonly used parts, supplies, lubricants, and maintenance materials. Assist with identifying and obtaining parts and materials needed for repairs and maintenance. Test equipment after repairs to verify safe and proper operation before returning it to service. Assist with plant maintenance and millwright activities, including mechanical repairs, equipment installation, adjustments, and general maintenance as needed. Assist with maintenance and repair of stationary sawmill equipment and related production systems. Use hand tools, power tools, welding equipment, and other maintenance equipment as required and within the scope of training and experience. Assist with troubleshooting mechanical problems throughout the mill and plant. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe maintenance work area. Follow all company safety policies, procedures, and applicable equipment and workplace requirements. Properly use required personal protective equipment (PPE). Promptly report unsafe equipment conditions, hazards, injuries, or other safety concerns. Perform other duties and assignments as directed or as necessary to support safe and efficient plant operations. Required Skills and Abilities Strong mechanical troubleshooting and problem-solving skills. Knowledge of diesel engines, heavy equipment, and mobile fleet systems. Ability to diagnose and repair mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and fuel-system problems. Knowledge of preventive maintenance practices and procedures. Familiarity with diesel emissions and after-treatment systems. Ability to use diagnostic equipment, hand tools, power tools, and other maintenance equipment. Ability to read and interpret equipment manuals, maintenance information, and service documentation. Industrial maintenance or millwright experience preferred. Welding and fabrication experience preferred. Strong organizational and time-management skills. Ability to prioritize repairs based on safety, equipment condition, and operational needs. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Good communication skills and ability to work effectively with equipment operators, supervisors, and other employees. Strong commitment to workplace safety and proper equipment maintenance. Education and Experience High school diploma or GED preferred. Minimum of 5 years of experience in diesel fleet maintenance, heavy equipment repair, industrial maintenance, millwright work, or a related field. Formal training, technical school, vocational education, or apprenticeship in diesel technology, heavy equipment repair, industrial maintenance, or a related field preferred. Previous experience maintaining and repairing heavy equipment and industrial machinery preferred. Valid driver's license required. Additional licenses, certifications, or manufacturer training related to diesel, heavy equipment, welding, or industrial maintenance preferred. Physical Requirements Ability to stand and walk for extended periods. Ability to bend, stoop, squat, reach, stretch, push, and pull while inspecting, maintaining, and repairing equipment. Ability to climb onto and work around heavy equipment, trucks, and machinery. Ability to work in awkward positions when accessing engines, hydraulic systems, electrical components, and other equipment systems. Ability to visually inspect equipment, components, gauges, and work areas. Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Ability to use hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, and other maintenance equipment safely. Ability to perform physical work both in a maintenance shop and in the field or equipment yard. Ability to work at elevated heights and climb ladders, stairs, and equipment platforms while following required safety procedures. Work Environment Primary work is performed in a clean, well-maintained, heated maintenance garage, with additional work performed throughout the mill, equipment yard, and outdoors as needed. Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in varying temperatures and weather conditions. Exposure to noise, dust, sawdust, dirt, grease, oils, fuels, and other materials associated with equipment maintenance and sawmill operations. Work may involve walking or working on wet, slippery, uneven, or rough surfaces. Work is performed around operating heavy equipment, vehicles, machinery, and other industrial equipment. Hearing protection is required in designated areas of the facility. Required PPE must be worn in accordance with company safety policies and procedures. Smoking is prohibited inside buildings and on company grounds except in designated smoking areas.
