  • July 01 to June 30 9 paid Holidays and 11 non contract work days SUMMARY Under general supervision to assist in and/or perform semi-skilled and skilled maintenance work in the construction, repair and maintenance of facilities and structures including buildings, parking areas, indoor and outdoor playground facilities, landscaped areas and grounds, and other school properties; to operate maintenance machinery, equipment and tools; and to perform a variety of tasks relative to an assigned area.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTION STATEMENTS
The following tasks are typical for positions in this classification. Any single position may not perform all of these tasks and/or may perform similar related tasks not listed here: 1. Assist in and/or perform minor and routine electrical duties; inspect and replace bulbs, ballasts, circuit breakers and related components; install wiring; test systems; refer complex work to higher-level electrical staff. 2. Perform a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled grounds maintenance duties and operate equipment in the maintenance of school grounds, sports fields and other landscaped areas. 3. Maintain and repair irrigation sprinklers, sprinkler lines and other landscape watering systems. 4. Diagnose, repair and maintain grounds keeping and related equipment. 5. Evaluate athletic field conditions for wear, pest problems, and fertilizer needs; coordinate and participate in the maintenance and preparation of athletic fields for practices, scheduled games and special events. 6. Remove snow in pedestrian and automotive traffic areas as required. 7. Provide assistance to other school staff in construction and other maintenance projects as required. 8. Clean and maintain project area upon completion of work. 9. Follow all safety rules and procedures established for work area. 10. May be assigned some duties at specific sites not traditionally associated with our Maintenance department (i.e. some custodial functions). 11. May be assigned duties similar to a site maintenance worker at lease facilities. 12. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
  • Operations, services and activities of a grounds maintenance program.
  • Methods, procedures and materials used in the maintenance of grounds and landscaped areas.
  • Methods and procedures used in maintaining turf and other surfaces.
  • Small engine repair and maintenance.
  • Methods and techniques of applying herbicides and pesticides in a safe manner.
  • Operational characteristics of mechanical equipment used in the preparation and maintenance of landscaped grounds.
  • Occupational hazards and safety precautions. Ability to:
  • Perform general grounds maintenance and routine gardening work.
  • Operate a variety of grounds maintenance equipment, power and hand tools in a safe and effective manner.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose grounds keeping equipment problems and malfunctions.
  • Repair and maintain mowing equipment used in the maintenance and set up of grounds, sports fields and other landscaped areas.
  • As directed, apply herbicides and pesticides.
  • Perform heavy manual labor.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions, manuals and drawings.
  • Ability to multi task and change priorities frequently.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Education and Experience Guidelines:
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Education:
Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
Experience:
One year experience in grounds keeping or a related area.
License or Certificate:
Possession of a valid New Mexico driver's license. Possession of, or ability to obtain any appropriate, valid certification as deemed necessary and appropriate by the State of New Mexico or School District. Will need to provide a copy of most recent Driving Record.

SUMMARY:
Oversees and conducts mechanical repairs on District vehicles, including gasoline and diesel powered engines; to perform diagnostic activities for vehicle repair; vehicles maintained include cars, trucks, buses, construction equipment and related vehicles; and to perform a variety of tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the full journey level class within the Automotive Technician series. This class is distinguished from the Automotive Technician I II and III by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned. Employees at this level receive instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are aware of all policies and procedures within the work unit. Positions are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the II level, or when filled from external sources, have prior experience.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTION STATEMENTS
The following tasks are typical for positions in this classification. Any single position may not perform all of these tasks and/or may perform similar related tasks not listed here: 1. Perform a variety of maintenance, inspection, diagnostic and repair duties on District vehicles; vehicles maintained include diesel and gasoline powered cars, trucks, buses, construction equipment and related vehicles. 2. Perform diagnostic analysis of vehicle failure by using current computer software programs. 3. Analyze vehicle and equipment failures; determine problems and causes; recommend and implement solutions. 4. Repair or replace faulty parts and components including, but not limited to, wheel bearings, oil seals, shock absorbers, exhaust systems and related components. 5. Perform a variety of minor and major vehicle and equipment repairs including engine overhaul, chassis, suspension, electrical, and hydraulic repair. 6. Replace component parts on vehicles and equipment; perform engine tune-ups; rebuild and overhaul engines; perform safety inspections on vehicles and equipment. 7. Perform preventative maintenance on vehicles and equipment, including lubricating and replacing worn parts; perform clutch and brake repair activities. 8. Repair minor vehicle damage; replace broken windows; touch up minor scrapes and dents; repair upholstery as needed. 9. Change and repair tires; install and service batteries, spark plugs, fan belts and other mechanical components. 10. Maintain vehicle records including gas, oil and other fluid usage, mileage, and repair activities. 11. Perform service calls; pick up and deliver parts and vehicles to various locations as needed; road-test vehicles to ensure proper operation. 12. Order and purchase tools, supplies, equipment and parts; maintain stock inventory. 13. Read and interpret wiring diagrams and other technical documentation as required. 14. Assist in the general maintenance and cleaning of the garage. 15. Follow all safety rules and procedures established for work area. 16. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required. 17. Drive Class B motor vehicles, including school bus as needed, to transport students.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Operational characteristics of internal combustion engines. Principles and practices of inspecting, troubleshooting and repairing gas and diesel powered engines. A proficient working knowledge of various diagnostic software for analyzing vehicle and bus failures. Methods and techniques of troubleshooting and diagnosing vehicle equipment and system malfunctions. Operational characteristics of vehicle diagnostic equipment and tools. Methods and techniques of inventory control. Shop management practices.
Ability to:
Use a computer proficiently. Learn and use associated computer programs for inventory to ensure adequate supplies of parts and equipment. Perform the full range of vehicle diagnostics with the most current diagnostic equipment. Perform major vehicle maintenance and repair duties. Conduct safety inspections on District vehicles. Maintain vehicle preventive maintenance schedules. Coordinate vehicle service activities with District departments.
Education and Experience Guidelines:
Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Education:
Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade, supplemented by specialized training in automotive repair.
Experience:
Three years increasingly responsible automotive maintenance and repair experience.
License or Certificate:
Must obtain and maintain a Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL) with proper endorsements for school bus to be eligible to transport students, as needed (will train).
