Under the direction of the Facilities Manager, the Maintenance Technician plays an essential role in keeping Menla's buildings, guest accommodations, roads, grounds, and infrastructure safe, functional, and welcoming. This position is ideal for a hands-on, dependable person who enjoys solving problems, working outdoors, and taking pride in caring for a unique property. Essential Duties & Responsibilities Respond to guest requests and assist with facilities and maintenance issues in guest accommodations while providing friendly, professional customer service. Enter, track, and complete maintenance work orders as needed. Perform routine building maintenance, inspections, and basic repairs throughout the property. Perform light carpentry, plumbing, and electrical repairs and occasional installations. Repair and patch sheetrock, paint, stain, and complete other general building repairs. Identify maintenance issues before they become larger problems and communicate concerns promptly to the Facilities Manager. Assist with building upkeep, including gutters, exterior areas, and keeping spaces around buildings clean, safe, and guest-ready. Assist with the organization and maintenance of guest spaces and participate in winter and off-season improvement projects. Assist with larger construction, renovation, and maintenance projects alongside the Facilities team. Assist facilities manager with road maintenance and repair including addressing potholes and removing tree debris. Assist with storm cleanup and property repairs as needed. Operate larger equipment such as skid steers and mini excavators when trained and qualified; experience is preferred. Perform seasonal winter duties including snow shoveling, ice removal, plowing, and sanding of roads, driveways, sidewalks, and walkways. Assist with grounds maintenance, including mowing, weed whacking, clearing pathways, and maintaining areas around buildings. Safely identify and remove trees or branches within reasonable size limits that may pose a risk to buildings, infrastructure, roads, or power lines. Procure, split, and prepare firewood harvested from the property for fireplaces and outdoor fire pits. Perform routine maintenance and basic repairs on maintenance, groundskeeping, and other property equipment. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe maintenance shop and work areas. Occasionally provide after-hours or on-call assistance for guests and staff, including covering the facilities emergency phone when guests are on site. Work collaboratively with other departments on site. Skills, Experience & Qualifications Previous experience in building maintenance, facilities, construction, property maintenance, or a related hands-on trade is preferred. Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills with the ability to assess an issue and determine an appropriate solution. Working knowledge of basic carpentry, plumbing, electrical repair, painting, and general building maintenance is preferred Hard-working, reliable, self-motivated, and able to work independently while also being an effective team member. Strong communication and customer service skills, particularly when interacting with guests. Ability to prioritize work orders and respond appropriately to urgent maintenance needs. Experience operating maintenance or grounds equipment such as lawn mowers, snow blowers, salt spreaders, skid steers, or mini excavators is a plus. Willingness to learn the safe operation and maintenance of larger equipment. Basic knowledge of equipment and vehicle maintenance is beneficial. Valid driver's license and reliable transportation required. Must be dependable and able to arrive at work on time in all weather conditions, including during active snowfall. Comfortable working outdoors in all seasons and in the varied terrain and weather conditions of the Catskill Mountains. Work Environment & Values This is a hands-on position that involves working throughout Menla's 330-acre property, including guest houses, common buildings, roads, wooded areas, and outdoor spaces. The Maintenance Technician should be comfortable working in a rural mountain environment and responding to changing priorities throughout the day. The successful candidate will be comfortable both working independently and collaborating closely with the Facilities Manager and broader Menla team. Physical Requirements Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, including tools, equipment, firewood, and supplies. Ability to walk, stand, bend, stoop, kneel, climb, and work on uneven terrain for extended periods. Ability to safely operate and maneuver maintenance and grounds equipment. Ability to use hand and power tools safely and effectively. Ability to perform repetitive motions including pushing, pulling, lifting, shoveling, and swinging tools. Ability to work on ladders and perform tasks at varying heights when necessary. Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, snow, and wind. Sufficient visual and auditory ability to safely operate equipment and identify potential hazards.
