Job Description

Full-time, year-round position. Average of 40 hours per week. www.millerferry.com for information about Miller Boat Line. Miller Boat Line's Engineers are maintenance technicians responsible for maintaining Miller Boat Line's fleet of 5x USCG certified Subchapter-K auto/passenger ferries. They also lead other company personnel in maintaining the equipment and buildings' systems throughout Miller Boat Line's grounds, properties, and operations.
Scope of Responsibility:
The Second Engineer reports to the Chief Engineer and assists him or her with maintaining all company property, especially the vessels. Technical Duties include (but are not limited to) regular maintenance and troubleshooting of: diesel and gasoline engines, electric motors and pumps, hydraulic systems, various piping systems, ship and shoreside electrical systems, light vehicle maintenance, building maintenance not limited to moderate plumbing, light to moderate electrical wiring. Other technical duties include fitting and welding of steel for vessels and dock infrastructure, field engineering, complete rebuilds of water pumps and various other pieces of equipment, winterizing vessels and equipment and grounds.
Administrative Duties include:
preparing vessels for yearly and 5-year drydock U.S. Coast Guard inspections, escorting U.S. Coast Guard personnel through the vessels during inspections and running necessary drills as required; writing reports and corresponding with vendors, contractors, company management and USCG through email in a professional, knowledgeable manner; using the company work-order and asset management program.
Sailing Duties:
upon hire, the Second Engineer shall be trained as a deckhand onboard the vessels. Candidates who currently hold a valid
USCG 100
Ton Great Lakes Master's License and have the aptitude to operate commercial vessels are preferred.
Management:
the Second Engineer will often act as project manager and crew lead in charge of overseeing several other employees.
Hours:
The Second Engineer works an average of (but not limited to) 40 hour weeks on a schedule that is predetermined by the Chief Engineer and/or the General Manager based upon maintenance cycle and crewing requirements. Shift times vary from early morning to afternoon/evening to overnight and may be different day-to-day. Seldomly, the employee will be asked to work up to 60 hours in a week if there is a maintenance emergency or unexpected staffing shortage. Must be able and willing to work nights upon occasion for up to six weeks in a row. Work on weekends and holidays is frequently required , especially during operating season of March-January. Overtime or odd shift hours occur more frequently during peak season. Winter vacation is built into the company's culture. Expect to take 3-4 weeks off for leisure January through February, only doing ship checks.

Candidate Must have the following
Capabilities or Qualifications:
Pass a pre-employment USCG required DOT Drug Test, submit to random testing.
  • 18 years good standing in gainful employment.
  • 15 years experience as full-time marine mechanic/technician on steel or aluminum commercial vessels OR 20 years experience in building and/or industrial systems applicable to this job description.
  • High School Diploma or GED minimum. Associates or Bachelors degree, or Technical College Degree or certificate is preferred.
  • Must be able to immediately obtain a TWIC, Merchant Mariner Credential, and FCC Radio Operator License.
  • Must hold a valid drivers license
  • Must be capable of obtaining First Aid and CPR certificates from the American Heart Association.
  • capable of lifting 50lbs occasionally, capable of lifting 100lbs on extremely rare emergency occasion (example: man overboard retrieval, electric motor swap)
  • all requirements of "Deck Hand" position.
  • able to stand, sit, squat, crawl, climb ladders and stairs, for long periods of time (8+ hours of each). Must be able to fit through 18" circular hatch or hole and crawl through these in bulkheads for extended lengths of time.
  • capable of working alone or in a group setting, either leading or following a group or persons.
  • Must be Proficient at Microsoft Word or other word processor, basic understanding of Excel and Outlook and write with proper spelling and grammar in a professional business manner. Must be able to type 25 words per minute.
  • Must be capable of self-learning in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must possess mechanical aptitude: the ability to understand simple and complex machines, basic physics and chemistry and their application to the task at hand.
  • Must be capable of critical thinking, troubleshooting, and problem solving.
  • The successful candidate will show a conceptual knowledge of electricity and generators, hydraulics and fluid dynamics, piping systems, diesel and gasoline engines,
  • have an understanding of high-school level physics concepts.
  • Be able to effectively communicate thoughts, instructions, feedback to other technicians/engineers, other company personnel, customers, and other persons related to the job. The preferred Candidate will have three or more of the following qualifications:
  • USCG engine room license (assistant through chief)
  • AWS,ABS Welding Certificate or proof of vocational school welding program completion.
  • 20 years experience in ship or maritime maintenance.
  • 20 years experience as a deckhand or master of a commercial vessel with a TWIC and MMC.
  • Service in the U.S. Military or Merchant Marine as an officer or non-commissioned officer with an honorable discharge.
  • Recent service as a full-time firefighter.
Undergraduate Degree or Technical School Certificate Compensation:
Salary of $100,000 to $140,000 per year depending on experience. 401k, Vacation, Paid Time Off (sick days), Health/Dental/Vision insurance, Short Term Disability, Life Insurance, Free ferry pass for dependents. 4 Weeks Paid Vacation Free Housing for 5 years (not including utilities and security deposit)
Timeline:
The hired candidate may start no later than April 1st, 2027. The Second Engineer shall be offered housing (rental contract required) for 5 years on South Bass Island (Put-in-Bay). After completion of the probationary period, the Second Engineer shall be required to be available on-call for ferry maintenance at all hours during certain periods as set by the Chief Engineer after conferring with the Second Engineer and General Manager; this will require the employee to live on South Bass Island.
