Job Description
About us: Al-Huda School is a private non-profit Islamic educational institution located in College Park, Md. We strive to provide quality Islamic education for preschool through 12th grade. Our mission is to develop well-rounded students inspired by Islamic principles, excellent academics, and extracurricular activities, while seeking to prepare our students to live a God centered life rooted in the teachings of the Quran and authentic sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Position Summary We are seeking a dependable, skilled, and hands-on Facility Service Technician to support the daily maintenance and operation of our school facility. The Service Technician will be responsible for completing assigned maintenance work orders, performing routine repairs, assisting with preventive maintenance, responding to facility issues, and helping ensure that the building remains safe, functional, and ready for daily school and community operations. This is a hands-on position for someone with general knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and commercial building maintenance. Primary Responsibilities Service Tickets & Daily Repairs Receive and complete assigned maintenance and service tickets. Respond to maintenance requests from classrooms, offices, restrooms, common areas, and other facility spaces. Troubleshoot reported problems and determine the appropriate repair. Document completed work and report unresolved or larger issues to the Maintenance Manager. Respond promptly to urgent maintenance situations including leaks, loss of power, HVAC issues, clogged drains, damaged doors, and other building concerns. HVAC & Mechanical Maintenance Replace HVAC filters according to the preventive maintenance schedule. Inspect HVAC equipment and mechanical rooms for abnormal conditions. Check and clean condensate drains and traps where appropriate. Inspect belts, filters, drain pans, pumps, and accessible mechanical components. Report unusual noises, leaks, alarms, temperatures, odors, or equipment conditions. Assist HVAC contractors and other mechanical service vendors when required. Perform routine HVAC maintenance within the technician's training and qualifications. Plumbing Troubleshoot and perform minor plumbing repairs. Repair or replace toilet components, faucets, flush valves, supply lines, traps, and other basic plumbing fixtures. Clear minor clogged sinks, toilets, and drains. Identify and respond to water leaks. Inspect restrooms and plumbing fixtures for proper operation. Assist with shutting down/isolation of water during emergencies. Report major plumbing problems requiring a licensed plumber. Electrical & Lighting Replace light bulbs, lamps, fixtures, switches, covers, and other basic components where permitted. Troubleshoot basic lighting problems. Inspect interior and exterior lighting. Reset appropriate equipment or circuits when authorized and safe to do so. Identify damaged electrical devices or potential electrical hazards. Immediately report electrical conditions requiring a licensed electrician. General Building Repairs Perform routine repairs and maintenance including: Doors, hinges, closers, locks, and hardware Ceiling tiles Drywall patching Painting and touch-up work Caulking and sealing Minor carpentry Shelving and furniture repairs Restroom fixtures and accessories Classroom equipment Exterior building components Fencing and gates Minor flooring repairs Weather stripping Signage Furniture assembly and installation Preventive Maintenance Assist the Maintenance Manager with scheduled preventive maintenance activities, including: HVAC filter replacement Mechanical equipment inspections Plumbing fixture inspections Lighting inspections Door and hardware inspections Roof/drain visual inspections where safely accessible Pump and mechanical-room inspections Exterior property walkthroughs Seasonal maintenance Equipment cleaning Lubrication and adjustment of appropriate mechanical components Complete preventive maintenance checklists and report equipment that may require repair or replacement. Building Inspections Perform routine walkthroughs of: Classrooms Offices Restrooms Hallways Mechanical rooms Electrical rooms Storage areas Kitchens Multipurpose spaces Exterior property Parking areas Entrances and exits Identify and report water leaks, damaged equipment, lighting failures, trip hazards, damaged doors, unusual odors, ceiling damage, temperature problems, and other facility concerns. School Operations Support Assist with classroom and office furniture moves. Assist with room and event setups when required. Support facility preparation for school programs and special events. Help prepare the building for inspections and scheduled contractor visits. Work around school activities to minimize disruption to students and staff. Maintain professional behavior when working around students, parents, staff, visitors, and vendors. Tools, Parts & Maintenance Areas Properly maintain school-owned tools and maintenance equipment. Keep maintenance shops and mechanical areas clean and organized. Maintain commonly used maintenance supplies and replacement parts. Notify the Maintenance Manager when filters, parts, materials, or supplies need to be reordered. Follow proper procedures for storing tools, chemicals, equipment, and maintenance materials. Safety Responsibilities Follow established safety procedures and use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). Maintain clear access to electrical panels, mechanical equipment, fire equipment, and emergency exits. Immediately report serious safety or life-safety concerns. Do not perform work requiring specialized licensing or certification unless properly qualified and authorized. Follow manufacturer requirements and school procedures when operating tools and equipment. Qualifications Previous experience in commercial, institutional, school, apartment, hotel, property, or general building maintenance preferred. General working knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and building maintenance. Mechanical aptitude and strong troubleshooting skills. Ability to safely operate hand tools, power tools, ladders, and maintenance equipment. Ability to follow work orders and complete assigned tasks independently. Ability to communicate maintenance findings clearly to supervisors. Basic smartphone/computer skills for work orders, email, photographs, and maintenance documentation. Dependable attendance and ability to respond to assigned maintenance priorities. Valid driver's license preferred. Physical Requirements Candidate should be able to: Walk throughout a large facility during the workday. Frequently use stairs and ladders. Bend, kneel, reach, and work in mechanical and maintenance areas. Lift and move maintenance materials, tools, and equipment. Perform physical maintenance activities throughout the workday. Work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions. Preferred Skills Experience in several of the following areas is preferred: General Maintenance HVAC Plumbing Electrical Carpentry Painting Drywall Commercial Doors & Hardware Pumps Preventive Maintenance Building Equipment Basic Troubleshooting Work-Order Systems What We Are Looking For We are looking for a technician who is reliable, hands-on, safety-conscious, and takes pride in their work. The ideal candidate does not simply complete a service ticket and walk away. They should identify the cause of the problem, make a proper repair within their capabilities, test their work, clean the work area, and communicate any additional concerns to the Maintenance Manager.
