Position Summary:

The Commercial Garage Door Technician Trainee will learn the skills and knowledge necessary to install, service, maintain, repair, and fabricate commercial garage door systems. This position is designed for a dependable, mechanically inclined individual who is interested in developing a long-term career in the commercial garage door industry. While previous commercial garage door experience is not required, previous welding and fabrication experience is strongly preferred . The trainee will work alongside experienced technicians and gain hands-on experience with sectional, rolling steel, high-speed, and other commercial door systems. The successful candidate must be willing to learn, follow instructions, work safely, and progressively take on additional responsibilities as their skills develop.

Key Responsibilities:

Garage Door Installation & Maintenance:

Assist experienced technicians with the installation, service, adjustment, and maintenance of commercial garage doors, including sectional, rolling steel, and high-speed doors.

Repairs & Troubleshooting:

Learn to identify and diagnose mechanical and electrical problems with commercial door systems and assist with repairs involving doors, operators, motors, panels, springs, hardware, and safety equipment.

Welding & Fabrication:

Perform welding and fabrication tasks as required for installations and repairs, including brackets, frames, supports, guards, and other custom components. Candidates should have a working knowledge of basic welding and metal fabrication.

Welding Skills Evaluation:

Candidates may be required to complete a practical welding and fabrication test as part of the hiring process. The test may include measuring, cutting, fitting, and welding a small metal assembly to demonstrate basic workmanship, safety, and familiarity with welding equipment.

Use of Tools & Equipment:

Learn and safely operate hand tools, power tools, welding equipment, lifts, ladders, and other equipment used in commercial garage door installation and service.

Safety Compliance:

Follow all company safety procedures and applicable jobsite requirements. Maintain a safety-first mindset when working around heavy equipment, moving machinery, electrical components, welding operations, and elevated work areas.

Customer Service:

Represent the company professionally when working at customer locations. Communicate respectfully with customers and assist with questions or concerns under the direction of an experienced technician.

Documentation:

Assist with completing service reports, documenting work performed, recording parts and materials used, and providing accurate information to the office.

Teamwork:

Work alongside experienced technicians and installers to complete jobs safely, efficiently, and according to company standards.

Training & Career Development:

Participate in hands-on training and progressively take on more responsibility as skills and experience are developed. The goal is to develop the trainee into a qualified, independent Commercial Garage Door Technician.

Qualifications:

Mechanical aptitude and a strong willingness to learn a skilled trade. Previous commercial garage door experience is not required . Previous welding and metal fabrication experience is strongly preferred. Ability to safely use basic hand tools and power tools. Ability to read a tape measure and perform basic measurements. Previous experience in welding, fabrication, construction, industrial maintenance, millwright work, automotive repair, or another mechanical trade is a plus. Existing TWIC card is strongly preferred. Previous experience obtaining or maintaining ISTC or HASC clearance/training is preferred. Dependable, punctual, and willing to work as part of a team. Strong work ethic and positive attitude. Ability to follow instructions and company safety procedures. Good communication and customer service skills. Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record. High school diploma or equivalent preferred; relevant trade experience may be considered in place of formal education.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to lift, carry, and maneuver heavy materials and equipment. Ability to work outdoors and in various weather conditions. Comfortable working from ladders, lifts, and other elevated work areas. Ability to work in tight or confined spaces when required. Ability to stand, bend, stoop, kneel, climb, and work with your hands for extended periods. Ability to safely perform physically demanding tasks associated with commercial garage door installation, service, welding, and fabrication.

Career Development:

This is an entry-level training position intended to develop a skilled Commercial Garage Door Technician. The successful candidate will receive hands-on training while working with experienced technicians and will progressively develop the ability to perform commercial garage door installations, repairs, troubleshooting, welding, fabrication, and service work independently.
