Field Technician Job Description The Field Technician supports geotechnical and construction materials testing projects throughout the St. Louis region. In this role, you perform field observations, inspections, testing, and documentation for utility, municipal, and foundation-related projects. You work primarily outdoors, travel to various project sites, and operate independently while professionally representing the organization in the field. You receive training and opportunities to earn relevant certifications as needed. Responsibilities Conduct construction observation and inspection on active job sites. Perform geotechnical field testing and construction materials testing in accordance with project specifications. Support utility construction projects, including work associated with regional utility providers and municipal agencies. Monitor foundation installations and document construction progress and quality. Collect accurate field data, record measurements, and document findings in a clear and organized manner. Communicate project updates, field conditions, and test results to engineers and project managers. Maintain testing equipment, tools, and field documentation in good working order and ensure proper calibration and care. Ensure compliance with project specifications, safety requirements, and applicable standards while on site. Interact professionally with contractors and project stakeholders during field activities. Travel locally to project locations and manage daily schedules with significant autonomy. Essential Skills Ability to work outdoors for extended periods and remain comfortable in various weather conditions. Capability to spend most of the day on active construction sites and navigate uneven terrain and typical site conditions. Dependability and strong sense of accountability, with the ability to work independently at project sites. Effective self-management skills to organize daily tasks and meet project timelines without constant supervision. Strong communication skills, including the ability to document observations clearly and accurately. Professional interpersonal skills to interact respectfully with contractors, clients, and project team members. Mechanical and technical aptitude with the ability to learn testing procedures and operate field equipment. Valid driver's license to support frequent local travel to project locations. Basic construction knowledge or general labor experience, particularly in concrete and foundation construction. Ability to follow safety protocols and adhere to project specifications during field operations. Additional Skills & Qualifications High School Diploma required. Associate degree preferred. Degrees in Geology, Geological Engineering, Civil Engineering, Environmental Science, or related fields are advantageous. Entry-level candidates are encouraged to apply, making this a strong opportunity for those starting a career in geotechnical or construction materials testing. Prior construction experience is beneficial, especially in utility construction, foundation construction, or concrete construction. Internship or prior field experience is preferred but not required. Familiarity with geotechnical field testing and construction materials testing is an advantage. Experience with utility, municipal, or foundation projects is helpful. Preferred but not required certifications include ACI Certification. Preferred but not required certifications include Nuclear Density Gauge Certification. Preferred but not required OSHA training or similar safety coursework. Work Environment This position is majority field-based and centers on work at construction sites throughout the St. Louis region. You spend most of your time on utility, municipal, and foundation projects, working outdoors in varying weather conditions. The role involves frequent local travel to project locations, using either company or personal vehicles, with mileage reimbursement provided when personal vehicles are used. You operate with significant autonomy in your daily activities, managing your schedule and tasks independently while still collaborating with a small, supportive team. The environment emphasizes hands-on work with geotechnical and construction materials testing equipment, adherence to safety standards, and professional interaction with contractors and project stakeholders. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Saint Louis, MO. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $30.00/hr.
