Ace Tree is seeking an experienced Lead Diesel & Fleet Mechanic to serve as the senior technical resource in our Birmingham maintenance shop. This is a hands-on working lead position responsible for maintaining and repairing a diverse fleet of commercial trucks, cranes, grapple trucks, chippers, skid steers, and other heavy equipment used in tree care operations. In addition to performing advanced diagnostics and repairs, the Lead Diesel & Fleet Mechanic will help coordinate shop priorities, oversee preventive maintenance, monitor outside repairs, and ensure accurate fleet records through Fleetio and Samsara. The ideal candidate is an experienced diesel and heavy-equipment mechanic who can troubleshoot complex issues, keep equipment operational, and bring organization and accountability to the maintenance function. Key ResponsibilitiesMechanical & Equipment Maintenance Diagnose, repair, and maintain diesel and gasoline-powered trucks and equipment. Perform maintenance and repairs on commercial trucks, cranes, grapple trucks, chippers, skid steers, trailers, and other heavy equipment. Troubleshoot diesel engines, electrical systems, hydraulic systems, air brakes, drivetrains, transmissions, steering, suspension, and related components. Perform preventive maintenance inspections and identify issues before they result in equipment failure or downtime. Respond to equipment breakdowns and perform field repairs when necessary. Perform or coordinate welding, fabrication, and equipment modifications as needed. Ensure vehicles and equipment are maintained in safe, reliable operating condition. Shop Leadership Serve as the lead technical resource for the maintenance shop. Help prioritize and coordinate daily repairs based on safety, operational needs, and equipment availability. Provide technical guidance and assistance to other mechanics and maintenance personnel. Review completed repairs and ensure work meets company safety and quality standards. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe shop environment. Communicate equipment status and anticipated downtime to operations leadership. Fleet Administration Maintain accurate vehicle and equipment maintenance records in Fleetio. Monitor preventive maintenance schedules, inspections, open work orders, repair history, and equipment downtime. Utilize Samsara information to identify vehicle issues, fault codes, maintenance needs, and fleet concerns. Create, update, and close work orders with accurate documentation of repairs, labor, and parts. Coordinate repairs with dealerships and outside vendors when work cannot be completed internally. Track outside repairs and follow up with vendors to ensure work is completed properly and on schedule. Assist with parts ordering, inventory control, warranty repairs, and vendor relationships. Help identify recurring mechanical problems and recommend repair-versus-replacement decisions when appropriate. Safety & Compliance Ensure vehicles and equipment meet applicable DOT and company safety requirements. Conduct and document routine inspections. Immediately remove unsafe vehicles or equipment from service when necessary. Maintain organized maintenance and inspection documentation to support compliance and audits. QualificationsRequired 5+ years of professional diesel, fleet, heavy-equipment, or commercial vehicle maintenance experience preferred. Strong experience diagnosing and repairing diesel engines and heavy equipment. Working knowledge of hydraulic, electrical, air brake, drivetrain, steering, suspension, and mechanical systems. Experience working with commercial trucks and construction or industrial equipment. Ability to independently diagnose complex mechanical problems. Strong organizational and documentation skills. Comfortable using computers, tablets, diagnostic software, and fleet management systems. Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record. Ability to safely operate vehicles and equipment for diagnostic and testing purposes. Preferred Previous experience as a Lead Mechanic, Senior Mechanic, Shop Foreman, or similar senior technical role. Experience with Fleetio and/or Samsara. Experience maintaining cranes, grapple trucks, chippers, skid steers, or tree-care equipment. CDL license. ASE or manufacturer certifications. Welding and fabrication experience. Bilingual English/Spanish strongly preferred. What We're Looking For We are looking for someone who combines strong mechanical ability with ownership and organization. The right person will be proactive rather than reactive—someone who understands that a successful maintenance operation isn't just about fixing equipment when it breaks, but about keeping the fleet safe, organized, documented, and ready to work.

Pay:

$27.00 - $40.00 per hour
