The Diesel Mechanic / Mobile & Shop Technician is a hands-on technical role responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and servicing heavy-duty trucks, trailers, and equipment both in the shop and in the field. This position requires strong mechanical and diagnostic skills, the ability to work independently on mobile calls, and the flexibility to support shop operations as needed. This role works closely with the Shop Foreman, Service Advisor, Parts Department, and Dispatch to ensure repairs are completed safely, efficiently, and to Murphys Towing standards. Technicians are expected to represent the company professionally during customer interactions and roadside service calls. In addition to standard repair duties, this role may assist with towing support, law enforcement calls, and recovery-related tasks when required. Key Responsibilities Mechanical & Diagnostic Work Perform diagnostics, repairs, and maintenance on heavy-duty trucks, trailers, and related equipment. Diagnose mechanical, electrical, air, hydraulic, and driveline issues accurately. Utilize diagnostic software including J-Pro, DiagnosticLink, Cummins Insite, and OEM platforms. Complete repairs in accordance with manufacturer specifications and company standards. Perform DOT inspections, preventative maintenance services, and safety checks. Ensure all work is documented accurately for labor, parts, and warranty purposes. Shop Operations Work efficiently within the shop to complete assigned jobs and meet turnaround expectations. Communicate repair progress, parts needs, and delays to the Shop Foreman or Service Advisor. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment. Assist with quality control by verifying repairs before units are released. Support shop workflow during high-volume or priority repair periods. Mobile Service Responsibilities Respond to mobile service calls for roadside repairs, breakdowns, and emergency service. Diagnose and repair vehicles in field conditions safely and professionally. Communicate clearly with dispatch and service advisors regarding job status and limitations. Maintain company service vehicles, tools, and mobile equipment. Represent Murphys Towing professionally when interacting with customers, drivers, and law enforcement. Support & Team Responsibilities Assist with light duty towing or law enforcement calls when requested. Support heavy recovery operations or shop projects as needed. Work collaboratively with other technicians and departments. Be flexible and willing to assist outside normal scope when required to get the job done. Requirements Proven experience as a diesel/heavy-duty truck technician. Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting abilities. Proficiency with J-Pro, DiagnosticLink, Cummins Insite, and OEM diagnostic platforms. Ability to work independently in mobile service situations. Solid communication skills with service advisors, dispatch, and customers. Ability to follow safety procedures and company policies. Willingness to work after hours, weekends, and on-call rotations as required. Valid driver's license with clean driving record Preferred Skills Experience with Fullbay, Towbook, or similar shop management systems. Familiarity with DOT compliance and inspection standards. Experience working alongside towing, recovery, or roadside service operations. Strong work ethic, reliability, and attention to detail. Schedule & Availability Primarily 5 days a week After-hours as required Participation in on-call rotation for mobile service and emergencies
Pay:
$23.00 - $35.00 per hour Expected hours: 40.0 - 50.0 per week
