Mayer Unified School District is seeking a dependable and skilled Diesel Mechanic / Fleet Mechanic to maintain our school buses and District vehicle fleet. Position Summary The Diesel Mechanic/Fleet Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing District school buses, vans, passenger vehicles, trucks, and other fleet equipment. The ideal candidate will have experience with diesel and/or heavy-duty vehicle maintenance, be able to independently troubleshoot mechanical problems, and take pride in keeping vehicles safe, reliable, and ready for service. Primary Responsibilities Diagnose, maintain, and repair diesel and gasoline-powered District vehicles. Perform preventive maintenance and scheduled vehicle services. Inspect and repair brakes, steering, suspension, electrical, cooling, fuel, drivetrain, and other vehicle systems. Perform oil changes, lubrication, filter replacement, fluid services, tire maintenance, and other routine repairs. Diagnose mechanical and electrical problems using appropriate tools and diagnostic equipment. Prepare school buses and District vehicles for required safety inspections. Identify unsafe vehicles and recommend when vehicles should be removed from service. Maintain accurate maintenance, inspection, and repair records. Track service intervals and preventive maintenance schedules. Maintain an organized and safe shop and work area. Maintain parts, fluids, filters, tools, and maintenance supplies. Assist with roadside breakdowns and emergency vehicle repairs when necessary. Coordinate specialized or outside repairs when appropriate. Work cooperatively with transportation staff, drivers, administrators, vendors, and other District employees. Perform other transportation or fleet-related duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or GED. Automotive, diesel, heavy truck, school bus, or fleet maintenance experience. Working knowledge of vehicle mechanical and electrical systems. Ability to diagnose and complete repairs independently. Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record. Ability to safely operate tools and equipment associated with automotive and diesel repair. Ability to meet District background and employment requirements. Dependable attendance and ability to work independently. Preferred Qualifications Two or more years of professional diesel, heavy-duty truck, school bus, or fleet maintenance experience. School bus or commercial vehicle maintenance experience. Current Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with appropriate school bus/passenger endorsements. Previous school bus driving experience. Ability and willingness to obtain a CDL and required school bus/passenger endorsements if not currently licensed. Willingness to assist with school bus routes, activity trips, or transportation coverage when needed and appropriately licensed. ASE or other automotive/diesel certifications. Air brake experience. Experience with computerized diagnostic equipment. Welding or basic fabrication skills. Experience maintaining a mixed diesel and gasoline fleet. Physical Requirements This position requires the ability to perform the physical duties associated with automotive and diesel repair, including standing, bending, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, climbing, and working underneath and around vehicles. Must be able to frequently lift approximately 50 pounds and safely handle heavier parts or equipment with appropriate assistance or lifting equipment. Work may be performed indoors and outdoors and may involve exposure to varying temperatures, noise, exhaust, oils, fuels, lubricants, and other conditions normally associated with vehicle maintenance.
