Tempe Crane & Rigging - Tempe, Arizona Full-Time | Pay DOE (Depending on Experience) Tempe Crane & Rigging is looking for an experienced Heavy Diesel Mechanic Lead to join our team. We need someone who is hands-on, mechanically strong, organized, and capable of taking ownership of the day-to-day maintenance and repair needs of our fleet. Our fleet includes mobile cranes, heavy trucks, trailers, and support equipment. This is a working lead position—the right person should be just as comfortable diagnosing a difficult hydraulic or mechanical problem as they are delegating work and keeping the rest of the team moving. Responsibilities Diagnose, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain heavy-duty diesel equipment Perform and oversee preventive maintenance and scheduled services Troubleshoot and repair hydraulic systems, including pumps, cylinders, hoses, valves, and related components Diagnose electrical, mechanical, air brake, cooling, drivetrain, and other equipment issues Perform repairs and maintenance on mobile cranes, trucks, trailers, and support equipment Delegate repair and maintenance tasks to team members based on skill level, priority, and workload Follow up on delegated work and ensure repairs are completed correctly and safely Prioritize repairs to minimize equipment downtime Identify needed repairs during inspections before they become larger or more expensive problems Maintain accurate service and repair records Assist with parts identification, purchasing, and inventory Communicate equipment status and repair needs with operators, dispatch, and management Help maintain DOT and company equipment standards Maintain a clean, organized, and safe shop Cost-Conscious Decision Making We are looking for someone who understands that good maintenance is not just about fixing equipment—it is also about making smart business decisions. The Lead Mechanic should be able to evaluate repair options, understand when a component should be repaired versus replaced, source parts responsibly, reduce unnecessary parts replacement, and consider both downtime and total repair cost when making recommendations. The goal is to maintain our equipment correctly and safely while avoiding unnecessary expenses and repeat repairs. What We're Looking For The ideal candidate has significant experience with heavy diesel trucks and/or heavy equipment and is capable of independently diagnosing problems rather than simply replacing parts until the problem is resolved. Crane and hydraulic experience is strongly preferred. Experience with any of the following is a major plus: Link-Belt cranes Manitex cranes Grove cranes Mobile hydraulic cranes Hydraulic troubleshooting and repair Heavy-duty diesel engines Air brake systems Electrical and electronic diagnostics DOT inspections and commercial vehicle maintenance Fleet maintenance management Previous experience as a Lead Mechanic, Shop Foreman, Fleet Mechanic, Heavy Equipment Mechanic, Crane Mechanic, and DOT is preferred. Leadership This position requires someone who can lead without needing to do every task personally. The Lead Mechanic will be expected to organize the workload, assign work to the team, provide direction when needed, and verify that repairs are completed properly. We are looking for someone who communicates well, holds themselves and the team accountable, and understands how to keep multiple repairs moving at the same time. Tools Applicants should have their own professional mechanic's tools appropriate for heavy-duty diesel and heavy-equipment repair. Tempe Crane & Rigging will provide or maintain access to appropriate specialty equipment and larger shop equipment as required for the work.

Compensation & Benefits Pay:

Competitive - DOE (Depending on Experience) - Overtime is calculated daily not weekly, time and half after 8 hours and double time after 12 hours.
