Starting Pay:

$27.00 per hour Windham Region Transit District (WRTD) is seeking a skilled and motivated Transit Technician to help maintain our fleet of transit buses and support vehicles. This position is responsible for performing inspections, preventative maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs to ensure the safe and reliable operation of public transportation services throughout eastern Connecticut. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Perform preventative maintenance and scheduled inspections on transit buses and support vehicles. Diagnose and repair diesel engines, electrical systems, cooling systems, suspensions, steering systems, and driveline components. Inspect, maintain, and repair air brake systems, including drum and disc brake systems. Utilize diagnostic equipment, technical manuals, wiring diagrams, and schematics to troubleshoot vehicle issues. Perform HVAC and air conditioning maintenance and repairs. Conduct safety inspections and identify defects requiring repair. Complete maintenance records, inspection reports, and repair documentation. Safely operate shop equipment, including vehicle lifts, welders, and other maintenance tools. Perform road tests to verify repairs and vehicle performance. Respond to road calls and emergency vehicle breakdowns as needed. Assist in maintaining a clean, safe, and organized maintenance facility. Follow all WRTD, OSHA, DOT, and environmental safety requirements. Perform other related duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or GED. Minimum two (2) years of diesel, heavy-duty truck, bus, fleet, or related mechanical experience. Valid Connecticut Driver's License required. Ability to obtain and maintain a Connecticut Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Passenger Endorsement within twelve (6) months of hire. Ability to pass a DOT physical examination. Subject to FTA drug and alcohol testing requirements. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Preferred Qualifications Experience maintaining transit buses, commercial vehicles, or heavy equipment. Experience with diesel diagnostics and electronic engine controls. ASE certifications. Welding and fabrication experience. Physical Requirements Ability to bend, kneel, crouch, stoop, and work beneath vehicles. Ability to lift up to 75 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds with assistance. Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions. Ability to safely operate and inspect commercial vehicles and maintenance equipment.
