The Diesel Mechanic II is responsible for performing skilled preventive maintenance, diagnostics, repairs, inspections, and troubleshooting on school buses, commercial vehicles, and related fleet equipment. The ideal candidate will have strong diesel mechanical and electrical knowledge, air conditioning/HVAC repair experience, advanced diagnostic capabilities, and hands-on experience using Cummins INSITE diagnostic systems . The successful candidate will take pride in maintaining safe, reliable vehicles that support the daily transportation of students. Key Responsibilities Perform preventive maintenance and scheduled servicing on diesel-powered buses and fleet vehicles. Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair diesel engines, transmissions, electrical systems, braking systems, suspension systems, steering components, HVAC systems, and other vehicle systems. Perform air conditioning system diagnostics, repairs, evacuation, refrigerant charging, leak detection, and system maintenance . Diagnose and repair A/C compressors, condensers, evaporators, expansion valves, blower motors, belts, hoses, electrical controls, and related HVAC components. Properly recover, evacuate, recharge, and service vehicle air conditioning systems using approved equipment and procedures. Utilize Cummins INSITE diagnostic software and systems to diagnose engine faults, monitor engine performance, retrieve and interpret fault codes, and assist with engine troubleshooting and repairs. Demonstrate working knowledge of Cummins diesel engines and electronic engine management systems . Use computerized diagnostic equipment to identify mechanical, electrical, and electronic problems. Conduct comprehensive inspections to identify mechanical, electrical, HVAC, and safety-related issues. Troubleshoot complex mechanical and electrical problems using diagnostic equipment, wiring diagrams, service manuals, and manufacturer specifications. Perform repairs and component replacements accurately and efficiently. Maintain accurate records of inspections, repairs, diagnostic findings, parts, and maintenance services. Respond to vehicle breakdowns and perform roadside or emergency repairs when necessary. Prepare vehicles for Maryland State and applicable regulatory inspections. Ensure buses are maintained in a safe, reliable, and roadworthy condition. Communicate vehicle conditions, repair needs, and safety concerns to the Maintenance Supervisor or management. Assist with prioritizing work orders and ensuring vehicles are returned to service in a timely manner. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area. Properly use and maintain shop tools, diagnostic equipment, and other maintenance equipment. Follow all company safety policies, OSHA requirements, applicable DOT regulations, environmental procedures, and manufacturer guidelines. Assist other mechanics and maintenance personnel with complex repairs and fleet-related projects. Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications Required:
High school diploma or GED. Minimum of 5 years of diesel or heavy-duty vehicle maintenance experience preferred. Strong knowledge of diesel engines, electrical systems, air brake systems, suspension, steering, and vehicle diagnostics. Hands-on experience diagnosing and repairing automotive or heavy-duty vehicle air conditioning systems. Knowledge and experience with refrigerant recovery, evacuation, leak detection, and A/C system charging . Working knowledge of Cummins INSITE diagnostic software and Cummins electronic engine systems. Ability to retrieve, interpret, and troubleshoot engine fault codes using computerized diagnostic systems. Strong understanding of diesel engine electrical and electronic systems. Ability to read and interpret service manuals, wiring diagrams, and repair instructions. Ability to use computerized diagnostic equipment and standard mechanic tools. Strong mechanical troubleshooting and problem-solving skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Valid driver's license with a clean driving record. Ability to safely lift, bend, stoop, climb, crawl, and work in confined or physically demanding areas.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience maintaining Cummins INSITE certification or extensive hands-on INSITE experience. ASE certifications, particularly in Diesel Engines, Electrical/Electronic Systems, or HVAC. Experience with additional diesel diagnostic platforms. Experience with electronic diesel engine controls and aftertreatment systems. Experience with air brake systems. CDL with applicable endorsements is a plus. Knowledge of Maryland vehicle inspection requirements and commercial vehicle regulations. Experience working in a fleet maintenance environment. Experience servicing school bus HVAC and climate-control systems. Compensation Annual Salary:
