THE POSITION

The Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee position with the Department of Transportation in Luzerne County offers a strong start for someone eager to learn the trade. This role gives you hands-on experience with many types of vehicles and heavy equipment. You will train beside experienced staff who will guide you as you build important mechanical skills. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position focuses on learning and practicing mechanical repair and maintenance skills through a structured training program. As a Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee, you will perform the following duties:

Repair Assistance:

Assist with repairing and overhauling cars, trucks, heavy equipment, and electrical components

Maintenance Learning:

Participate in preventative maintenance tasks and learn diagnostic and tune-up procedures

System Repairs:

Learn to repair cooling, suspension, electrical, heating, air-conditioning, brake, steering, and transmission systems

Inspection Support:

Assist with state safety and emissions inspections and complete required forms and records

Equipment Diagnostics:

Use diagnostic tools to identify problems and help repair motorized hand equipment

Safety Training:

Follow safety procedures, identify hazards, and complete injury reports during training

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

Full-time employment

Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.

Schedule is subject to change based on weather/season. Winter shifts are 4:00 AM to 12:00 PM or 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

Telework:

You will not have the option to telework in this position.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

Two years as a Tradesman Helper (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration) working in the automotive field; or

Graduation from a post-high school diesel technology curriculum of an accredited trade or technical school; or

An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Special Requirements:
  • This position requires possession of an active Pennsylvania Class A or B Commercial Driver Learner's Permit or License on the first day of employment with the Air Brake Restriction (L) and Manual Transmission Restriction (E) removed, or equivalent.
  • This position requires employees to possess an active Medical Examiner's Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations on the first day of employment.
  • All positions will require employees to obtain a valid Pennsylvania Class 4 or 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification during the probationary period.

This position will require employees to pass the Department of Transportation's Mechanic Training course during the probationary period.

This position requires possession of an active Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N) during the probationary period.

Additional Requirements:

Employees are required to obtain and maintain CDL endorsements and certifications necessary to operate specific pieces of equipment

This position requires employees to demonstrate successful operation of equipment with a manual transmission.

This position is subject to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Regulations.
