THE POSITION

As a Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Intern with the Department of Transportation, Montgomery County Maintenance Organization, you will train in a busy garage where real vehicles and equipment are repaired every day. You will learn important skills that help you stand out when you start your career. This internship gives you professional experience and teaches you how tools, equipment, and repair methods work in real life. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position provides practical training in automotive repair and maintenance while supporting garage operations. It focuses on developing mechanical abilities, safe work habits, and familiarity with tools and equipment. As a Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Intern, you will perform the following duties:

Repair Skills:

Develop basic knowledge of vehicle maintenance tasks such as inspections, part replacements, and routine service

Work Order Reading:

Read and understand written instructions for required repair activities

Tool Handling:

Learn correct use and care of power, hand, and air tools

Safety Practices:

Follow safe work habits and learn proper handling of hazardous materials

Work Area Care:

Perform cleaning tasks to maintain a safe and organized garage space

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

High school internship for the 2026-2027 school year.

Work schedule will vary based on the agreement between the high school and Commonwealth of Pennsylvania (COPA) location.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

You must be at least 16 years of age at time of hire.

You must be a junior or senior enrolled in high school during the 2026 - 2027 school year.

Letter of Recommendation:

You must attach a Letter of Recommendation from your school's co-op coordinator, career or guidance counselor, or similar designated school professional indicating you meet your school's requirements and are being recommended for this opportunity.

By participating in this program, the student and school agree to use the Commonwealth's Training Plan, Statement of Responsibilities, and Student Performance Evaluation. Forms will be provided to the student upon acceptance of this position.

Work Permit:

Minors will be required to submit their Work Permit upon acceptance of this position.

Must be a vo-tech (career and technical center) student in an approved vocational program that has provided preparation and training for the duties of this internship.
