Dominion Energy is seeking multiple System Protection Technician Interns for Summer 2027 at our district offices in Herndon and Loudoun, VA. This internship offers a hands-on opportunity to gain real-world experience in the field of electric transmission and distribution. Interns will work closely with System Protection Technicians to develop a foundational understanding of substation electrical equipment, high-voltage diagnostic testing, protective relays, and control circuit troubleshooting.

This role is ideal for students interested in fieldwork and technical operations, with the potential for full-time employment upon successful completion of the internship and alignment with Dominion Energy's culture and career pathways.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Review and interpret electrical design drawings. Assist with infrared scans and basic instrument checkout and repair. Participate in high-voltage diagnostic testing and relay testing. Support functional testing of protection systems and control circuits. Shadow System Protection Technicians to gain insight into substation equipment and field operations. Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience Strong problem-solving skills with mechanical and/or electrical equipment and control circuits.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Solid math, technical, and mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work effectively in a team environment.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills.
  • Must meet physical requirements including: Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Manual dexterity, color vision, hearing, climbing, stooping, standing, and bending.

Weight restriction of 290 pounds due to equipment limits. Education Requirements Must be enrolled at a 2-year or 4-year school pursuing a Bachelors or Associate's Technology degree in the preferred areas of: Electrical & Electronic Engineering Technology Mechanical Engineering Technology Electromechanical Technology Electronics Technology Instrumentation Technology Mechatronic Technology Other comparable disciplines may be substituted for the disciplines listed above; Must have a 2.5 cumulative GPA or higher.

Must have an anticipated graduation date of Winter 2027 or later

What You'll Get Hourly Rate:

$21.00 - $28.00 The hourly rate listed is the rate we anticipate paying for this position. If a range is listed, the actual hourly rate offered may vary based on factors such as the selected candidate's degree type, academic major, and/or school classification (e.g., sophomore, junior, senior).
