We help researchers and healthcare teams keep the equipment they rely on working, including at institutions such as the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University. We're hiring a Pittsburgh-based Field Service Engineer who enjoys working with tools and mechanical systems, solving practical problems, and helping people. You'll learn a valuable specialty with paid, hands-on training and an experienced service manager working alongside you. Previous experience with laboratory equipment is welcome, but not required. Full time | Guaranteed 40 paid hours per week What you'll do Your main focus will be repairing, maintaining, and inspecting sterilizers and related laboratory equipment, from large units built into laboratory walls to tabletop autoclaves, laboratory washers, and dryers. Autoclaves use steam to sterilize equipment and materials. We'll teach you how these systems work and how to service them safely. This is physical, hands-on mechanical work. Some systems involve large components, heavy-duty tools, and larger wrenches. You'll need to be comfortable applying controlled force, loosening and tightening fittings, and positioning parts safely, using lifting aids and team assistance when needed. Troubleshoot problems, replace parts, and perform preventive maintenance and inspections Help service centrifuges, incubators, and other laboratory research equipment for our direct customers Support manufacturer service jobs through MERA, a national network that connects equipment manufacturers with local service teams like QRS Explain findings to customers and complete clear service reports, parts records, and time entries using a computer Follow safety procedures and keep your tools, equipment, and work area organized Training and your workday You'll report to your service manager, a working manager who performs service calls alongside the team. For at least your first six months, you'll ride with your manager and learn through real repairs and maintenance visits. You'll gradually take on independent calls with continued technical support. This is a home-based field position, with service calls spread throughout Pittsburgh and the surrounding area. You'll travel from home to customer sites. Most service work is local; jobs that require travel outside the region come up occasionally but are relatively rare. Between six and nine months after joining, QRS will provide a company van with space to store your tools and equipment. QRS also provides a laptop, specialized test equipment, and the specialized clothing needed for the job. You are expected to provide your own basic hand tools. Participation in required technical training, including MERA programs, is part of the role. This training requires air travel, with a heavier training and travel schedule when you first join QRS. Be prepared for more frequent training trips early in your employment as you build your skills. What we're looking for Mechanical aptitude, comfort using hand tools, and a willingness to learn Dependability, initiative, and pride in doing a job well Clear communication with customers and teammates, plus comfort with computers and paperwork Ability to do active service work, including bending, kneeling, reaching, and handling tools and components, with reasonable accommodation where needed A Pittsburgh-area home base, a valid driver's license, a safe driving record, and reliable transportation during training Ability to meet customer-site background check and drug screening requirements Experience or training in mechatronics, industrial maintenance, HVAC, appliance repair, automotive repair, or electronics is helpful. We welcome technical-school graduates and people with practical skills gained through work, school, or personal projects. As you develop, there will be opportunities to take on more responsibility and help train others. Benefits UPMC Gold PPO health insurance, with QRS paying 100% of the employee-only premium $273 per month toward dependent health coverage in 2026 Company-paid dental and vision premiums for you and enrolled dependents Company-paid basic life and AD&D insurance 401(k) matching: 100% of the first 3% you contribute, plus 50% of the next 2%, for a company match of up to 4% of eligible pay 21 days of PTO per year, accrued throughout the year and available to use after your first 90 days, plus paid holidays Paid training and professional development A company van after six to nine months, plus company-provided specialized equipment and work clothing Benefits are subject to applicable plan eligibility and terms.
