Job Description

Position:

Field Operations Restoration Technician Location(s): Sullivan, IL; Job locations can vary

Full-time The Field Operations Restoration Technician performs fiber optic restoration and related field work in a fast-paced environment where job duties and working conditions can change on a daily basis. The employee must be flexible and prepared to perform a variety of physical and technical tasks as assigned.

Primary Responsibilities:

Respond to fiber optic outages, cable damage, and restoration assignments as directed by supervisors. Perform restoration work that may vary significantly from day to day depending on the location, type of damage, and weather. Drive company vehicles for extended periods of time to and from restoration sites and between multiple job locations. Safely operate construction equipment, including mini skid steers and other equipment, after receiving appropriate training and authorization. Operate mini skid steer controls using both hands simultaneously and maintain control of the equipment throughout operation. Perform manual digging, raking, prying, shoveling, pulling, pushing, and other physical labor associated with fiber optic restoration. Regularly lift, carry, move, and position materials, tools, cable, and equipment weighing approximately 50-75 pounds. Assist with exposing, repairing, replacing, protecting, and installing underground fiber optic cable and related facilities. Operate or assist with hydro-vac equipment used to safely expose underground utilities and fiber optic facilities. Perform hydro-vac work requiring extended periods of standing, walking, bending, reaching, and lifting. Assist in setting up and breaking down restoration equipment and work zones. Work around excavation areas, construction equipment, roadways, traffic, utilities, and other job-site hazards. Perform work in mud, dirt, gravel, uneven terrain, ditches, fields, roadways, and other outdoor environments. Work outdoors for extended periods in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, snow, and wind. Assist other restoration technicians and equipment operators in various conditions. Maintain flexibility to respond to changing priorities and emergency restoration needs. Perform additional construction, maintenance, restoration, and other duties as assigned.

Experience/Skills/Requirements:

Previous experience in construction, utility work, telecommunications, landscaping, excavation, road work, or other outdoor physical labor is preferred. Previous fiber optic or telecommunications experience is helpful but not required. Experience using basic hand tools and power tools. Experience working safely around construction equipment, vehicles, and active work areas. Experience working as part of a crew and following directions from a supervisor or crew leader. Previous experience working outdoors in varying weather conditions is preferred.

Physical Requirements:

Lift and carry up to 75 pounds independently on an occasional basis. Frequently lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Work with heavier materials and equipment with assistance from another employee or mechanical lifting equipment when required. Push, pull, move, and position cable, conduit, tools, equipment, and materials. Stand and walk for extended periods, including up to 8-10 hours during a workday. Frequently bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, and work in awkward positions. Enter and exit trucks and equipment, and work around utility structures. Work with hands and arms above shoulder level for extended periods. Use hand tools and power tools requiring repetitive gripping, grasping, and manual dexterity. Walk over uneven, muddy, rocky, or rough terrain.

Working Conditions:

Restoration technicians may work in: Outdoor environments throughout the year. Extreme heat, cold, rain, snow, wind, and other adverse weather conditions. Mud, dirt, gravel, uneven terrain, and construction areas. Roadways, shoulders, ditches, easements, fields, and residential or commercial properties. Areas with vehicle traffic and active construction equipment. Underground excavations, handholes, vaults, and other restricted work areas.

Schedule:

Full-time position, 40 hours per week with overtime opportunities Shifts range from Monday
