Teaching Full Job Description Restoration Lead Technician Location:
Reno-Tahoe and surrounding areas
Type:
Full-Time, Non-Exempt Compensation:
$24-28/hour + bonus incentives, with advancement opportunities based on demonstrated leadership and performance About Restoration 1 of Reno-Tahoe Restoration 1 of Reno-Tahoe is a veteran-owned and operated restoration company specializing in water damage, mold remediation, fire and smoke damage, biohazard cleanup, and related restoration services. We are building a company with a reputation for exceptional craftsmanship, transparency, communication, and doing things correctly when nobody is watching. We aren't interested in doing the bare minimum. We don't cut corners. And we don't want our customers, adjusters, hygienists, or owners finding deficiencies that our own team should have caught first. Our goal is to restore trust in the trades, and that starts with the quality of the people on our team. Position Purpose The Lead Restoration Technician is an experienced, hands-on restoration professional who can take ownership of assigned projects from start to finish with minimal supervision. This is not an entry-level position and is not intended for someone who still requires step-by-step direction on basic mitigation or remediation work. A successful Lead Technician should be able to: Understand the complete scope of work before beginning. Organize and direct the crew. Perform restoration work alongside the team. Teach less-experienced technicians proper procedures. Inspect work and correct deficiencies before leaving the job. Maintain accurate project documentation. Recognize when the scope needs to change and communicate it immediately. Complete projects without avoidable callbacks caused by missed scope, incomplete work, poor workmanship, or lack of quality control.
The expectation is simple:
know the scope, lead the crew, teach the high standard, inspect the work, communicate problems early, and finish the job correctly. Core Responsibilities Lead assigned water mitigation, mold remediation, fire/smoke, demolition, biohazard, crawl space, drying, and related restoration projects. Take ownership of assigned projects from mobilization through completion with minimal supervision. Review and understand the scope of work before work begins and make sure every crew member understands what is expected. Conduct thorough jobsite inspections and identify affected materials, necessary containment, equipment requirements, demolition needs, cleaning requirements, and other project conditions. Recognize additional damage, changed conditions, or missed scope and communicate those conditions before proceeding or closing out the project. Direct technicians on the jobsite while actively participating in the physical work. Assign work based on technician experience and ensure the crew maintains appropriate pace, quality, cleanliness, and safety. Train and coach technicians in proper restoration procedures rather than simply completing difficult tasks for them. Correct poor workmanship, documentation deficiencies, unsafe behavior, PPE issues, or incomplete work when observed. Hold team members accountable for completing assigned responsibilities correctly and completely. Perform quality-control inspections throughout the project and before demobilization. Ensure the full authorized scope has been completed before equipment is removed or the project is considered finished. Protect unaffected finishes, contents, and customer property throughout the project. Maintain professional communication with homeowners, property managers, hygienists/IEPs, adjusters, vendors, and other project stakeholders as appropriate. Participate in the on-call rotation and respond professionally to emergency losses. Maintain clean, organized, properly stocked company vehicles and properly care for company tools and equipment. Project Ownership & Quality Standards A Lead Technician is expected to do more than perform restoration tasks. You are responsible for making sure the job is actually completed correctly.
That means:
Do not assume work was completed correctly — inspect it. Do not leave known deficiencies for someone else to discover or correct. Do not close a project without confirming the complete scope has been addressed. Do not ignore conditions that may require a scope change. Do not wait until the end of the project to communicate problems. Do not allow poor habits or workmanship from technicians you are leading to continue unaddressed. Ask for support when a situation falls outside your experience or authority, but do not require routine supervision to perform the normal responsibilities of the position. Avoidable callbacks resulting from missed scope, incomplete work, poor quality control, or failure to communicate known conditions are not consistent with the expectations of this position. Leadership Expectations This is a working leadership position. You will be expected to lead while performing field work alongside the crew. A Lead Technician must be able to: Set the example for workmanship, professionalism, safety, PPE, cleanliness, and productivity. Give clear directions and confirm that team members understand their assignments. Teach technicians why and how work should be performed correctly. Identify opportunities to improve a technician's skills and coach them in real time. Address mistakes directly, respectfully, and promptly. Hold others accountable while also taking personal accountability for the overall performance of the crew. Accept constructive feedback and make corrections without defensiveness. Communicate early when additional resources, materials, equipment, information, or management support are genuinely needed. Help create a field culture where technicians take ownership rather than waiting to be told every next step. Documentation Expectations The Lead Technician is responsible for making sure documentation accurately tells the story of the project.
This includes:
Clear and meaningful Encircle notes. Before, during, and after photographs. Accurate measurements. Moisture readings and drying documentation when applicable. Equipment placement and monitoring. Documentation of demolition and materials removed. Documentation of cleaning and remediation procedures performed. Identification and documentation of changed conditions. Daily progress notes. Documentation sufficient to show what work was performed and why. Technicians may assist with documentation, but the Lead Technician is responsible for verifying that the project documentation is complete and accurate before the job is closed. Technical Expectations Candidates should already demonstrate working proficiency in most of the following areas without requiring step-by-step instruction: Water damage emergency response. Structural drying principles. Moisture mapping and monitoring. Proper setup and monitoring of air movers and dehumidification equipment. Containment systems and critical barriers. Negative-pressure environments. Air scrubbers and negative-air machines. Precision demolition. Identification and removal of affected or contaminated building materials. Mold remediation procedures. HEPA vacuuming and detailed post-remediation cleaning. Preparing remediation areas for post-remediation verification. Fire and smoke cleaning. Odor-control procedures. Biohazard cleanup procedures. Antimicrobial application. Crawl space and attic work. Vapor barrier installation. Protection of unaffected building materials and contents. Proper use of PPE and respiratory protection. Jobsite safety and hazard recognition. Experience & Qualifications Minimum 3 years of restoration industry experience required. Previous experience acting as a lead technician, crew chief, or senior technician strongly preferred. Demonstrated ability to independently manage field work from project setup through completion. Strong working knowledge of water mitigation and mold remediation procedures. Ability to identify whether work has been completed correctly and recognize deficiencies before leaving the project. Ability to teach and demonstrate restoration procedures to less-experienced technicians. Ability to give clear direction and hold coworkers accountable professionally. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Strong attention to detail and organization. Ability to communicate confidently and professionally with customers. Ability to remain composed and make sound decisions during emergency or changing jobsite conditions. Basic computer and technology proficiency, including the ability to learn and properly use company documentation systems. Reliability, punctuality, initiative, accountability, and consistent follow-through.
Physical / General
Requirements Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record. Ability to participate in an on-call rotation. Ability to perform physically demanding restoration work throughout the workday. Ability to frequently lift and carry restoration equipment and materials, including loads in the 20-100 lb. range when job conditions require. Ability to climb ladders and work at ceiling height. Ability to work in crawl spaces, attics, containments, and other confined environments. Ability to work around cleaning agents, antimicrobial products, restoration chemicals, mold-impacted materials, and other jobsite conditions while using required PPE and respiratory protection. Ability to repeatedly push, pull, lift, carry, kneel, bend, and perform other physical restoration activities. Success in This Position We will consider a Lead Restoration Technician successful when ownership can assign you a project and reasonably expect that: You understand the scope and what needs to happen next. The crew knows what they are responsible for. The work is performed correctly and safely. Technicians are being taught and held accountable. Changed conditions are identified and communicated early. Documentation accurately reflects the work performed. The customer receives professional communication. The entire authorized scope is verified before project completion. Quality-control issues are corrected before leaving the project. The project does not require an avoidable return visit because something within the assigned scope was overlooked or left incomplete. You ask for help when circumstances genuinely require it, but you do not require hand-holding to perform the normal responsibilities of a Lead Technician. What We Offer Health insurance benefits (full time employees only). Full-time hours plus applicable incentive compensation. Paid time off for eligible full-time employees. Paid company holidays. Company-provided uniform shirts/hats. Work-attire reimbursement in accordance with current company policy. Paid training and opportunities to obtain additional IICRC certifications.
