They provide advanced fuel system technology that enables heavy-duty diesel engines to operate on 100% biodiesel (B100), delivering immediate, scalable, and cost-effective fleet and supply chain decarbonization. Deployable on both new trucks during manufacturing and existing fleet vehicles in as little as 24 hours, Optimus' technology integrates seamlessly into fleet operations without compromising vehicle performance, uptime, or range. Optimus' fuel system solutions are deployed across all major heavy-duty OEM platforms, helping fleets reduce both operating costs and emissions while supporting domestically produced, American-made biodiesel. Job Description Optimus seeks a driven, technically motivated Field Service Technician with an aptitude for diagnostics and troubleshooting mechanical and electrical systems. The ideal candidate is someone who finds satisfaction in fixing problems by analyzing customer complaints, following up with probing questions, and applying corrective action. Sometimes the corrective actions will be determined with little reference material; this is where the base knowledge and experience of the individual will shine. This role will be one of the company's primary customer-facing experts on the Vector Fuel System and SMARTFuel technologies, delivering hands-on installation, service, and support in the field. Systems training will be provided alongside a comprehensive on-boarding plan. As a member of a small, autonomous team at a fast-growing technology company actively building out processes and resources, the ideal candidate is comfortable working through unfamiliar problems, exercising independent judgment, and finding solutions using available tools and experience in the absence of documentation. At times, problems will require strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting techniques, or the ability to research, identify and apply those techniques. The ability to apply a methodical approach to problem solving and a genuine interest in hands-on technical work are crucial assets. While heavy-duty diesel experience is valuable, we are open to candidates from a variety of technical backgrounds — including industrial maintenance, millwright, HVAC, heavy equipment, automotive, electrical, and other skilled trades — along with a dedication to representing Optimus with dignity and distinction in customer environments. This is an hourly position ($36.48/hr-$41.02/hr) with overtime possible, to be based in Pittsburgh, PA, with significant travel requirements (up to 75%+ of the year, at times). Optimus is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. People of color, LGBTQ+ people, people with disabilities, veterans and members of other historically disenfranchised groups are strongly encouraged to apply. If you are unsure about being qualified for this position after reading the responsibilities and requirements, please apply anyway! We are most excited to work with individuals who learn quickly and have a passion for clean energy solutions. Key Responsibilities Become an expert on the Vector system and SMARTFuel technology, and the various electronic, software, hardware, and mechanical components therein. Perform on-site system installations, including vehicle disassembly and reassembly (interior, exterior, fuel system, and engine compartment), installation of fuel tanks, manifolds, fuel and coolant lines, wiring harnesses, electronic controllers, and display units. Respond to customer support tickets, providing remote diagnostics and troubleshooting support via phone, email, or video before escalating to a possible on-site visit. Perform thorough upfront research and trip preparation for each job to ensure the correct tools, parts, and documentation are brought on the road. Reference and follow technical drawings, schematics, wiring diagrams, and documentation when available, and work through the problem methodically when it is not. Receive, collaborate, and execute guidance given from the engineering team or other support personnel. Provide technical guidance and support to service partners performing installations, service, or repairs. Perform appropriate system repair verification upon project completion. Fill out ticket logs and other required documentation accurately and promptly for each job. Document novel or particularly difficult solutions so that the knowledge is captured for the broader team, and the same solution doesn't have to be developed twice. Maintain a high degree of professionalism at all times when representing Optimus in customer-facing environments. Book travel responsibly, managing schedules and logistics to reliably meet customer commitments. Assist with other tasks and projects as assigned including assisting with various Vector system component assembly and manufacturing. Required Qualifications Minimum of 3 years of hands-on experience diagnosing and troubleshooting complex mechanical and electrical systems in heavy-duty diesel, heavy equipment, automotive, industrial maintenance, millwright, HVAC, electrical, hydraulics, controls, or similar field experience. Proven formal diagnostic and troubleshooting training a plus. Strong hands-on mechanical aptitude with the ability to disassemble, inspect, repair, and correctly reassemble equipment. Ability to systematically troubleshoot a problem, isolate the root cause, and determine an appropriate repair rather than relying solely on trial and error. Comfort using electrical test equipment, diagnostic tools, schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical documentation to identify root causes. Ability to work independently in the field and make sound technical decisions with limited direct supervision. Strong problem-solving mindset and perseverance when working through unfamiliar or difficult failures. Ability to clearly document findings, repairs, and unresolved issues so others can learn from the experience. Strong communication skills and willingness to collaborate with engineering, customer service, and other corporate teams to improve technical resources and processes. Valid driver's license and ability to travel to customer locations as required. Preferred Experience 5+ years electrical & hydraulic diagnostic and troubleshooting experience Familiarity with a shop environment is a strong plus. Experience working from incomplete or evolving technical documentation. Experience performing root-cause analysis or documenting recurring equipment failures. Formal technical training, apprenticeship, or trade certification. CDL Other Job Requirements A passion for alternative energy solutions. Frequent physical activity such as bending, climbing, twisting, and lifting of tools, parts, and materials (up to 70 lbs). Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record; CDL a plus. Work occurring in a variety of environments, including but not limited to: office, outdoor, warehouse, and shop conditions. Ability to work around a variety of particulates, lubricants, and chemicals. Adaptive to ever-changing workload, conditions, and environments. Significant domestic travel is required (75%+). Flexible hours of operation. Commitment to following safe work practices. Steady office presence when not assigned to field work
