Job Description

Job Title:
CEMS Technician Job Description The CEMS Technician serves as the primary technical expert responsible for the accurate, stable, and continuous operation of emissions monitoring equipment across a variety of industrial sites. This role focuses on installing, troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems (CEMS) from multiple manufacturers, both in the field and in-house. The technician provides hands-on technical support, performs routine maintenance, calibration, and fabrication work, and offers remote assistance to clients to develop and implement tailored action plans that ensure regulatory compliance and optimal system performance. Responsibilities Serve as the primary technical expert for the operation, maintenance, and reliability of CEMS equipment at diverse customer sites. Install, configure, and commission CEMS produced by a variety of manufacturers in industrial environments such as power plants, steel mills, refineries, and manufacturing facilities. Troubleshoot system issues, diagnose faults, and perform corrective repairs to restore accurate and stable emissions monitoring performance. Conduct routine preventive maintenance on CEMS, including inspection, cleaning, component replacement, and functional testing to ensure peak performance. Perform in-house equipment repair, fabrication, and calibration to support field operations and maintain equipment readiness. Provide remote technical support via telephone and email, guiding clients through diagnostics, adjustments, and corrective actions. Work directly with clients to understand their specific needs and develop action plans to address operational, compliance, and performance requirements. Document work performed, test results, and system status using MS Word and Excel for reporting and data management. Load, unload, and transport equipment and tools from service vehicles to job sites, ensuring proper handling and organization. Climb ladders and access elevated platforms on smokestacks and other structures, potentially up to 450 feet, to install and service monitoring equipment. Work safely in industrial settings by consistently using appropriate PPE and respiratory equipment and following site safety procedures. Collaborate with team members in field crews ranging from small groups to larger teams to plan, set up, and execute testing projects. Prepare and stage testing equipment in the warehouse, including layout, inspection, and loading of vehicles for upcoming jobs. Perform general maintenance tasks in the warehouse or home office, such as cleaning, organizing, and equipment upkeep during slower periods or inclement weather. Travel locally and nationwide to various client sites, often spending several days on location, and adapt to varying schedules and project durations. Work extended days in the field, including occasional weekends, and contribute to larger projects that may require up to approximately 60 hours per week including travel time. Essential Skills Demonstrated full technical mastery of CEMS installation, maintenance, and operational services. Hands-on experience working with emissions monitoring, air compliance, and related environmental measurement systems. Ability to work safely in industrial settings, including consistent use of PPE and respiratory equipment. Strength and physical capability to lift and carry up to 85 pounds and to load and unload equipment from service vehicles. Physical capacity to climb ladders and work at elevated levels on smokestacks, potentially up to 450 feet, for extended periods. Ability to work outdoors in extreme weather conditions for extended periods while maintaining focus and safety. Willingness and ability to travel locally and nationwide, often for several days at a time, to support client projects. Valid driver's license with a clean driving record and ability to operate company vehicles safely. Capability to drive for up to 10 hours or ride as a passenger for up to 15 hours as required by project travel. Proficiency with MS Word and Excel for reporting, documentation, and data management. Electrical and mechanical aptitude to install, troubleshoot, and repair complex monitoring systems. Experience or familiarity with HVAC systems, which is considered a strong plus. Additional Skills & Qualifications Background in air compliance, emissions testing, or related environmental or industrial disciplines. Experience working in industrial environments such as power plants, steel mills, refineries, and manufacturing plants. Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to develop practical action plans in collaboration with clients. Effective communication skills for providing clear remote support via telephone and email. Ability to work effectively as part of a team, including on larger crews of up to 20 people. Flexibility to adapt to varying workloads, changing schedules, and seasonal fluctuations in field work. HVAC experience, which enhances understanding of mechanical and airflow systems and is considered a great plus. Comfort working at heights and in varying weather conditions, including wind and lower temperatures at elevated levels. Work Environment The CEMS Technician works primarily in the field at industrial sites such as power plants, steel mills, refineries, and manufacturing plants, often at heights ranging from 100 to 400 feet above ground level. At these elevations, temperatures are typically lower and winds are slightly higher, so technicians should plan for changing conditions and bring extra layers of clothing. Field days commonly range from 8 to 10 or more hours, while days in the warehouse are typically around 8 hours. Work is always performed in a team environment, with crew sizes ranging from small groups of three to larger teams of up to twenty people depending on the project. The role requires frequent travel, with schedules varying week to week; assignments can last from a single day to an entire workweek, and occasional weekend work may be required, generally not more than once a month. On non-field days, technicians work in the warehouse or home office, laying out and preparing testing equipment, loading vehicles for upcoming jobs, and performing cleaning and general maintenance tasks. Work consistency can vary due to factors such as severe rain, sleet, snow, or ice, which may delay field jobs; during these times and during slower winter periods, technicians typically continue working on warehouse or office-based tasks. For larger projects, technicians may work long days and accumulate up to approximately 60 hours per week, including on-site work and paid travel time. Typical attire in the field includes jeans, a long-sleeve T-shirt, boots (not necessarily steel-toe), and additional layers such as a coat and stocking cap during colder months. The company culture emphasizes a family-oriented environment, promotes from within, and supports employees with comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, vision coverage, a retirement plan with employer match, paid time off, and paid holidays, while operating as a leader in the air testing industry with ongoing expansion across multiple regions.
