Description Summary SUMMARY :
Under general supervision, installs, maintains and repairs various water treatment, water distribution and water reclamation systems.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Performs general preventive maintenance of the water distribution and water reclamation systems.
  • Repairs water system leaks.
  • Performs sewer cleaning; services collection system stoppages; performs video scoping of sewer mains; performs smoke tests.
  • Replaces water meters from businesses or residences; tests meters for accuracy.
  • Replaces meter cans.
  • Installs and/or replaces manhole covers.
  • Performs service taps for new buildings.
  • Repairs valves.
  • Replaces, repairs or places in service fire hydrants.
  • Maintains all equipment and tools.
  • Supports the relationship between the City of Plainview and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and City staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
Knowledge:
  • City policies and procedures.
  • Water treatment/water reclamation systems.
  • Plumbing principles, practices and techniques.
  • Principles and practices of troubleshooting.
  • Principles and practices of project management.
  • Customer service principles and practices.
Skill in:
  • Explaining state and federal rules and regulations, and City policies and procedures.
  • Analyzing problems and developing effective solutions.
  • Assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks, projects and demands.
  • Reading maps.
  • Operating heavy equipment.
  • Using power and hand tools.
  • Using welding equipment.
  • Operating motorized maintenance equipment.
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with other City staff, vendors, suppliers and customers.
  • Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High School diploma or equivalent; AND two years of experience in water treatment/water reclamation maintenance field operations; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION
  • Possession of a valid Texas Class B Commercial Driver's License or ability to obtain within 6 (six) months of hiring.
  • Class C Water Distribution Operator license.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed primarily in an outdoor work environment. May be exposed to dangerous machinery, extreme weather conditions, potential physical harm, hazardous chemicals and infectious diseases. May be required to climb ladders and work in confined spaces. May be required to lift and carry items weighing up to 100 pounds.
