Job Summary About Us Pillar Machine is an award-winning, American manufacturer of CNC woodworking machinery and a world leader in CNC mortise-and-tenon and dowel-insertion machines. Since 1983 we've designed, built, programmed, and supported our Pillar and Larick machines from our Utah facility, shipping 80-100 machines a year and supporting customers through 40+ dealers across North America. About the Role We're hiring an experienced Service Technician to support Pillar and Larick customers throughout the life of their equipment. You'll own a machine from our shop floor to the customer's floor: set it up and prove it out before it ships, install and commission it on-site, train the customer's team, and keep it running for years through remote support, field service, preventive maintenance, rebuilds, and upgrades. This is a hands-on position requiring strong problem-solving ability, good judgment, professional customer communication, and the ability to work independently. You'll work as part of a shared Service Department and may also support Production, Engineering, and other departments as needed. No woodworking-machinery experience needed — we'll train you on our equipment. We're hiring for strong mechanical and electrical fundamentals, curiosity, initiative, and the ability to learn complex machinery. What You'll Do Customer Technical Support Support customers by phone, email, video, and remote-access tools (e.g., TeamViewer), and solve problems without a trip whenever possible. Ask the right diagnostic questions to pinpoint likely causes, and communicate clear next steps. Recognize when a problem needs parts, engineering help, or an on-site visit, and stay involved until it's resolved. Field Service, Installation & Training Travel to customer sites to diagnose, repair, maintain, and upgrade Pillar and Larick machinery. Install, level, wire in, and commission new machines; verify electrical, pneumatic, controls, and safety systems; run start-up and test material. Make sure every open item is resolved or clearly communicated before leaving the customer's facility. Train operators and maintenance staff on safe operation, setup changeovers, preventive maintenance, and basic troubleshooting, adapting to each customer's experience level. Travel - Once fully trained, expect about 25-45% travel, mostly in the U.S. and Canada, including air travel, rental cars, hotels, and multi-day trips. Trips cover installations, service calls, customer training, preventive maintenance, and occasional urgent service. Some weekend travel may be needed. Troubleshooting & Repair Diagnose and repair electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, controls, software, tooling, and process-related issues on new and legacy machines. Work on motors and motor controls, sensors and switches, relays and contactors, power supplies, VFDs, servo motors and drives, pneumatic valves and cylinders, bearings, shafts, linear-motion systems, and PLC-controlled systems. Perform teardowns, alignment, component replacement, rebuilds, retrofits, and upgrades, then test the machine to verify the repair. Machine Setup & Shop Support Set up and prove out new and custom machines before shipment: install tooling, load and adjust programs and parameters, run sample parts, and measure results. Serve as the final quality check before machines leave the building. Help with assembly, rebuild and retrofit projects, inspections, customer-specific modifications, and production troubleshooting when not traveling. Give feedback to Production and Engineering on recurring design, assembly, or quality issues, and help train other employees. Documentation & Parts Keep accurate Salesforce service cases: symptoms, troubleshooting steps, findings, repairs, program changes, parts replaced, and final resolution. Record service and travel time and submit receipts and sign-off documents promptly. Identify parts needs, provide technical details for parts quoting, and recommend preventive maintenance, rebuilds, upgrades, or training to the Service Manager — based on real customer needs, never pressure. What We're Looking Fo r 5+ years hands-on with industrial machinery, CNC, automated equipment, industrial maintenance, or field service.
Strong electrical troubleshooting:
read schematics, use a multimeter, 24 VDC control circuits through single- and three-phase AC power, and industrial machine wiring.
Strong mechanical skills:
teardown and repair, bearings, gears, linear motion, pneumatics, alignment; read drawings and tolerances and use precision measuring tools. PLC experience is strongly preferred (ladder logic, going online, I/O troubleshooting). Comfortable with Windows PCs, machine PCs, remote-access software, basic networking, and IT troubleshooting. A track record of troubleshooting equipment, not just replacing predetermined parts. Clear written and verbal communication; calm and professional with customers when equipment is down. Organized, self-directed, and able to manage an open job list and shifting priorities. Valid driver's license and ability to obtain and maintain a passport. Your own set of common hand tools (ask about our tool program).
Helpful backgrounds:
industrial field service, industrial maintenance, CNC or machine tools, automated production, packaging or manufacturing equipment, robotics, mechatronics, or millwright work. The Kind of Person Who Does Well Here Wants to understand why something failed, gathers evidence, and tests assumptions before replacing parts. Works through unfamiliar problems logically and asks for help when it makes sense. Takes ownership of assigned work and follows through on commitments. Explains technical issues in plain language and leaves customers confident their concern was taken seriously. Shares knowledge, helps coworkers, and pitches in where needed rather than working from a "that's not my job" mindset. Adapts when priorities change. Training & Growth We don't expect you to know our machines on day one. You'll start with extensive hands-on time in our shop — learning how our machines are built, set up, operated, installed, and serviced — and shadow experienced technicians on setups, installs, and field service. From there you'll take on remote service calls, setups, and installations, working toward independent field-service work within your first six months to a year. Work Environment & Schedule A mix of shop, field, and desk work in manufacturing environments that can be noisy, dusty, hot, or cold. Stand and walk for long periods, bend, kneel, reach into tight machine areas, use ladders, hand and power tools, and lift about 50 lbs. Monday-Friday during regular business hours on non-travel days, with occasional early, late, or weekend work when customers need it.
