AFSCME Local 818.55 General Statement of Duties The Lead Mechanic performs skilled work in diagnostic, repair, overhaul, maintenance and operation of trucks (diesel and gasoline powered), Town automobiles, heavy and light equipment, small engines and related mechanical equipment. Supervisory duties include day-to-day oversight and planning and assignment of work to Mechanic(s), preventive fleet maintenance management, inventory, garage safety, organization and cleanliness. Supervision Received Works under the immediate direction of the Director of Public Works, or designee. Typical Duties

• Collaborates with Director of Public Works in developing and updating an electronic maintenance management system to schedule, track, and archive maintenance activities, parts lists, equipment diagrams, and specialized maintenance tasks in extensive detail.
• Plans, organizes, prioritizes, repairs, and assigns work based upon equipment manufacturer's recommendations with consideration of operational needs.
• Routinely records and tracks a complete maintenance history for each piece of equipment utilizing available job order and maintenance software.
• Provides information in sufficient detail to allow for effective workload analysis and work assignment based upon priority of maintenance and repair tasks affecting critical vehicle and equipment needs.
• Orders parts and performs proper and timely equipment maintenance and repairs to ensure equipment availability and reliability to ensure the fleet meets routine and seasonal needs.
• Collaborates with Public Works employees in education of maintenance procedures according to manufacturer recommendations, accepted industry standards, and/or operations manuals.
• Keeps current on the latest advances in automotive technology and diagnostic tools by regularly attending or seeking out training and knowledge enhancement opportunities.
• Coordinates with the Director of Public Works on solving re-occurring equipment and operational problems.
• Follows and enforces standard safety procedures and regulations.
• Assists with budget recommendations, expenditures, garage improvements, specifications for major equipment and vehicle, materials, and parts purchases.
• Performs removal, replacement, or overhaul of equipment.
• Responds to emergency road calls for disabled Town vehicles and equipment and takes appropriate action.

Required Qualifications High School Diploma or equivalent. Valid commercial motor vehicle operator's license, CDL Class A with air brake endorsement required Automotive Service Excellence (ASE)Master Certification (A Series or T Series) preferred or achievable within two years of hire Minimum of three years of practical experience in mechanical equipment repair including diesel engines, heavy equipment and passenger vehicles. Proficient computer skills including web navigation and e-mail communication required. Familiarity with Maintenance software programs preferred. Welding and fabrication skills desirable. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to efficiently and accurately diagnose mechanical equipment problems and perform repairs. Ability to read and interpret meters, gauges, and other diagnostic tools and accurately record results. Ability to perform basic mathematical computations. Ability to interpret specifications and a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic or schedule form. Ability to work and communicate effectively with co-workers, superiors, sales and manufacturer representatives both orally and in writing. Physical Requirements The Lead Mechanic is a physically demanding position performed in a combination of garage and field locations. The applicant will be required to successfully complete pre-employment drug testing and applicable random drug and alcohol testing throughout employment. Frequently required to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods of time. Frequently required to handle or operate objects, controls, tools and equipment. Frequently the employee is required to bend, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; climb or balance. Must be able to smell, hear and see specifically close, distance, color, and peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Must be able to lift, push, pull, and move up to eighty (80) pounds or greater. The employee regularly works in outdoor weather conditions being exposed to cold, heat, rain, snow and wind. Employee may be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fire, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and vibration. The employee may work in confined spaces. The employee may be exposed to rodents, insects and other wildlife. The noise level in the garage and field is moderate to excessive. The applicant will be required to successfully complete applicable background and criminal investigation. Work Schedule This is a full-time forty (40) hour position. The regular schedule is 6:00 am to 4:30 pm Monday through Thursday and winter seasonal schedule modification. This position requires call-in availability for winter seasonal emergency repairs or standby as needed.
