Job Description

This position is located within the Department of Public Works (DPW), Fleet Management Administration (FMA). The Department of Public Works (DPW) provides municipal services in two distinct program areas: environmental services/solid waste management and parking enforcement. Both contribute to making District streets and public spaces clean, safe, attractive, and accessible. DPW's Fleet Management Administration supports municipal operations by procuring, fueling, and maintaining thousands of District government vehicles, from sedans to heavy equipment. Fleet Management is also responsible for purchasing environmentally friendly, alternative-fuel vehicles (AFV) for the city. The incumbent is responsible for assisting in the maintenance and repair of heavy mobile equipment assigned to mechanics in various shop areas. Duties and Responsibilities Performs the following duties in any assigned mechanical shop within the Bureau of Direct Maintenance and Repair, Fleet Management Administration. Depending upon the workload of the mechanical shop assigned, the incumbent may be assigned to a different work area within the Bureau of Direct Maintenance and Repair. Initially, the incumbent works under the immediate supervision of the Mechanic Supervisor and, as training progresses, eventually works alone, performing such tasks as removing wheel assemblies, removing and charging batteries, cleaning and replacing spark plugs, and replacing starters, alternators, headlight units, batteries, cables, radiators, and fuel pumps. Assists in the cleaning of carburetors, makes idling adjustments, and removes and replaces brake assemblies. Incumbent also receives developmental tasks incidental to the work of a higher-grade mechanic. Qualifications and Education Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision. Knowledge of equipment, assembly, installation, repair, etc. Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. Use of measuring instruments Licenses and Certifications Incumbent must possess a valid Motor Vehicle Operator's Permit. Work Conditions/Environment In the performance of assigned tasks, the incumbent frequently works near moving mechanical parts, both inside and outside. Works indoors on wet, greasy floors in an uncomfortable position, manipulating tools to access parts that are often hard to reach. Work is also performed outside in the field as the situation dictates, thus exposing workers to various conditions, i.e., rain, heat, cold, snow, and danger from falling on slippery floors, carbon monoxide fumes, and electrical shocks. Regularly exposed to cold, wet, and/or humid conditions, dirt, fumes, toxic and/or caustic chemicals.

Position Designation:
This position has been designated as safety-sensitive ; therefore, the incumbent of this position will be subject to enhanced suitability screening pursuant to Chapter 4 of DC Personnel Regulations, Suitability, and as such, incumbents of this position shall be subject to criminal background checks and background investigations, as applicable.
Essential Designation:
This position is designated as an essential employee under the provisions of the District Personnel Manual, Chapter 12. As such, your services may be required in emergency situations to perform crucial duties, such as snow removal, debris removal, transportation, shelter operations, food distribution, and communications. These duties may be performed when the government is closed or when most employees are dismissed early. Critical District government operations cannot be suspended or interrupted during emergency situations. Applicants claiming "Residency Preference" will be required to maintain residency in the District of Columbia for a minimum of seven (7) years. Failure to do so may result in forfeiture of employment.
Residency Requirement Statement:
If the position you are applying for is in the Career, Management Supervisory, or Educational Service at an annual salary of one hundred fifty thousand dollars ($150,000) or more, you must establish residency in the District of Columbia within one hundred eighty (180) days of the effective date of the appointment and continue to maintain residency within the District of Columbia throughout the duration of the appointment.
