Position Summary The Mechanic Technician B is a diesel technician responsible for performing preventive maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on Pelican Waste & Debris vehicles and equipment. This position works primarily on heavy-duty diesel trucks and refuse collection equipment and is expected to independently diagnose and repair common mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, brake, and vehicle system issues. The Technician B plays an important role in keeping Pelican Waste & Debris' fleet safe, reliable, and road-ready while minimizing equipment downtime and supporting daily operations. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Diagnose, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain heavy-duty diesel trucks and refuse collection equipment. Perform scheduled preventive maintenance services and inspections according to company and manufacturer standards. Diagnose and repair diesel engine and related components. Inspect, diagnose, and repair air brake systems, steering, suspension, wheel-end components, and driveline systems. Diagnose and repair electrical and electronic systems, including wiring, lighting, batteries, charging systems, sensors, and related components. Diagnose and repair hydraulic systems associated with refuse collection bodies and equipment. Perform repairs to refuse bodies, compactors, cylinders, hoses, pumps, valves, and related components as qualified. Utilize OEM and aftermarket diagnostic software and equipment to identify faults and troubleshoot vehicle issues. Review driver-reported defects and determine appropriate repairs. Perform DOT-related inspections and repairs within the technician's level of training and certification. Conduct road tests or operational tests, when authorized and qualified, to verify repairs and proper vehicle operation. Perform minor welding and fabrication work when qualified. Assist with tire, wheel, and other routine fleet maintenance as necessary. Accurately complete work orders and document repairs, labor, parts used, inspections, and preventive maintenance in the company's maintenance system. Communicate repair needs, parts requirements, and anticipated downtime to shop leadership. Identify additional safety or maintenance concerns discovered during repairs and report them promptly. Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in a clean, organized, and safe condition. Follow all Pelican Waste & Debris safety policies and applicable OSHA, DOT, federal, state, and local requirements. Assist Technician C or less-experienced maintenance employees with repairs and troubleshooting as directed. Participate in training and development opportunities to improve technical knowledge and advance toward Technician A level. Perform road calls and emergency repairs as needed. Perform other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or GED preferred. Minimum two (2) years of experience performing maintenance and repair on diesel, heavy-duty, commercial, or comparable equipment; additional relevant technical education may be considered. Working knowledge of diesel engines and heavy-duty vehicle systems. Experience diagnosing and repairing air brake, electrical, steering, suspension, and hydraulic systems. Ability to perform preventive maintenance and common repairs with limited supervision. Basic computer skills and ability to accurately enter work orders and repair information into electronic maintenance systems. Ability to use diagnostic equipment, scan tools, technical manuals, schematics, and repair information. Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record. Must be able to safely operate vehicles and equipment necessary to perform assigned duties. The successful Technician B should have: Strong mechanical and troubleshooting abilities. Working knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, air brakes, steering, suspension, and drivetrain components. Ability to read and interpret wiring diagrams, hydraulic schematics, technical manuals, and diagnostic information. Ability to identify the root cause of common mechanical problems rather than simply replacing components. Ability to prioritize repairs based on safety and operational needs. Ability to work independently on routine and moderately complex repairs while recognizing when assistance from a senior technician is appropriate. Good communication and teamwork skills. Strong attention to detail and commitment to completing accurate repairs. Ability to maintain accurate maintenance and repair records. Commitment to workplace and fleet safety. Physical Requirements While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to: Stand and walk for extended periods. Bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, reach, push, and pull. Work underneath, on top of, and around heavy-duty vehicles and equipment. Frequently use hands and arms to operate tools and equipment. Lift and carry up to 50 pounds independently and heavier components with appropriate assistance or mechanical lifting devices. Work in awkward or confined positions while performing vehicle repairs. Maintain the visual and auditory ability necessary to safely inspect, diagnose, and repair equipment. Work Environment Work is primarily performed in a maintenance shop, fleet yard, and outdoor environment. The employee may be exposed to: Moving vehicles and mechanical equipment. Diesel exhaust, fumes, dust, grease, oils, and chemicals. Hydraulic systems and pressurized equipment. Loud noise and vibration. Hot, cold, wet, or humid weather conditions. Uneven surfaces and varying outdoor conditions. Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn as required.
