03/31/26Summary:
Performs complex duties in the operation, repair and maintenance of buses and other vehicles in the school transportation program. Most work is performed based on prior experience. The employee is expected to troubleshoot and resolve problems of varied complexity and difficulty with little assistance. Significant problems may be referred to a supervisor. Most errors are expected to be resolved by the employee. The employee receives general supervision, and work is occasionally reviewed while in progress.Essential Duties:
(These duties represent a sample and may vary by position.) Perform safety inspections on state vehicles and equipment as mandated by NCDPI; Perform skilled mechanical repairs including the repair of brakes, suspensions, drive trains, transmissions, and other repairs. Perform preventative maintenance procedures on time; tune engines; fuel, grease and lubricate school system vehicles; adjust brakes; change and repair tires; install and service, water pumps, replace injectors, batteries, light bulbs, fan belts and other mechanical parts as necessary. Respond to road service calls as required; maintain service vehicle and stock parts necessary for on-road repairs in a neat and orderly fashion. Perform limited vehicle body repairs as necessary including metal work repair. Complete required reports to capture all labor, parts and materials expended while performing inspections, preventive maintenance and repairs on vehicles. Submit required reports and time records daily to supervisor. Attend provided training opportunities. Perform related duties as assigned.Education and Experience:
Minimum Desirable Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance. Three years progressive experience in equipment maintenance. Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities of fleet maintenance (minimum of two years measurable experience and proof of training) Associate degree from a technical college or diesel certification Licensing /Certification Requirements:
Possession of, or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire, a Class B CDL license with P & S endorsement required Ability to obtain within 90 days and maintain a North Carolina Department of Public Instruction inspector certification Knowledge / Skills /Abilities:
Techniques and procedures of mechanical repair and preventive maintenance. Tools, materials and methods used in the maintenance, adjustment, servicing and repair of heavy-duty bus equipment including computer diagnosis. Basic principles and procedures of records keeping as applied to service records. Practices and procedures used in body repair including metal properties and handling techniques. Applicable rules and regulations pertaining to the operation of school buses and pupil transportation. Locate and diagnose of mechanical defects in vehicles. Operate and care for tools and equipment used in vehicle maintenance. Work under extreme weather conditions and hazardous traffic situations. Work independently in the absence of supervision. Understand and follow oral and written instructions. Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.Physical Requirements:
Constant standing; frequent crawling, kneeling, walking, bending, stooping, lifting, carrying, grasping, twisting, reaching, pushing, pulling; occasional climbing and balancing; exerts physical effort up to 4 - 6 hours of a normal work shift in handling objects over 30 pounds.
