NOTICE OF INTERNAL POSTING OF VACANCY POSITION
Department of Public Works
  • Mechanic
POSITION OBJECTIVE
This is to advise a vacancy for the above-mentioned full-time position in the Township Public Works Department. Mechanics work under the supervision of the Road supervisor. Mechanics inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair mechanical, hydraulic, electronic, and electrical systems of light to heavy trucks, agricultural, highway and construction equipment. Mechanics perform preventative maintenance, completes repairs and services all Wall Township vehicles and equipment. Employees at all levels are expected to effectively work together to meet the needs of the organization through work behaviors demonstrating Wall Township values. Employees are also expected to lead by example and demonstrate the highest of ethical behaviors.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Interested candidates must possess the ability to perform all duties by the Public Works Department such as but not limited to: Automotive Repair
  • Utilizes a variety of shop tools and equipment including scan tools and diagnostic equipment to perform difficult to complex repair tasks on vehicles and equipment. Judgment/Decision Making
  • Ability to use logic and reasoning to understand, analyze, and evaluation situations and exercise good judgment to make appropriate decisions. Communication
  • Have ability to listen and understand information and ideas being presented verbally and in writing.
Performs highly specialized diagnostic and repair work related to computerized ignition and fuel injection systems, body control, transmissions, differentials, steering components, and engines; test drives vehicles and equipment to ensure proper operation and performance. Overhauls and rebuilds mechanical components and systems such as diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions, hydraulic, electrical, cooling, brake and suspension systems. Inspects and performs preventative maintenance on a variety of cars, trucks, and specialized equipment such as agricultural equipment, construction equipment, and other related types of equipment. Completes and maintains records of servicing operations such as work orders and labor time entries by means of a personal computer, and vehicle bi-directional interface software. Performs federal inspections, maintain a safe, clean, organized work area. Performs all related work utilizing maintenance person in an emergency situation. Responsible for the repair and maintenance of equipment and vehicles including but not limited to diesel, gasoline, electrical, fuel and heating/cooling systems. Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical issues. Ability to perform basic welding tasks. Must be able to operate vehicles and equipment as required to perform functions of position. Services and repairs equipment and may perform structural repairs in the field. Assists in other duties as required (i.e. equipment, transport, etc.) Assists other employees in the performance of special duties and/or projects. Secures equipment, tools and accessories to prevent loss. Assists in other duties and conducts related work as required. Interested candidates must possess the ability to operate all equipment utilized by the Public Works Department such as but not limited to: Backhoes, loaders, graders, rollers, jackhammers, leaf vacuum machines, leaf turner machines, chippers, tamps, air compressors, large and small portable pumps, motorized paving machine, large and small lawnmowers, tractors, lawn aerators, blowers, road striping machine, road sweepers, snow plows, salt spreaders, road sanding equipment, all township trucks and cars and assorted hand tools, and ground care tools.
Requirements:
1. Educational requirements include a four-year standard high school diploma or GED, a graduate of formal accredited automotive vocational training in the areas of Automobile Technician or Medium/Heavy Truck Technician. 2. Accredited original equipment manufacturer (OEM) new model certification shall be achieved, on a regular ongoing basis as scheduled by management, during the entire term of employment. 3. A minimum of four years of experience in performing skilled automotive or medium/heavy truck work involving inspection, troubleshooting, diagnosis, modification, maintenance, rebuilding and repair. 4. Candidates shall possess a valid New Jersey driver's license and shall possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL). Driving record must be acceptable. 5. Requires a pre-employment medical evaluation and substance abuse testing and is subject to post-employment random alcohol and controlled substance testing. 6. The candidate will be required to work in all types of weather conditions. Candidates can be expected to be called out after regular operating hours, on weekends and on holidays to perform urgent duties as may be related to the nature of Department of Public Works responsibilities. Candidates must be able to be called out for emergencies such as snowfall, floods, downed trees, various weather events, etc. as essential personnel of Wall Township. 7. Must be available in case of emergencies. 8. A good working relationship with co-workers and the general public is a necessity. Candidates must possess the ability to work independently and cooperatively as a crew member; ability to communicate effectively, follow oral and written instructions, and follow safe work practices.
Physical Requirements:
The candidate will be required to perform heavy manual labor, including lifting heavy objects. The candidate must frequently lift and/or move up to 70 pounds, also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision and depth perception. Candidates must possess the ability to walk, sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crawl, crouch, turn and twist.
Salary Range:
$55,347.70
  • $97,881.
