The Heavy Equipment Technician is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, servicing, and maintaining construction and heavy equipment to ensure maximum uptime, reliability, and customer satisfaction. The ideal candidate will have strong mechanical and diagnostic skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently while maintaining a high standard of safety and workmanship. This position will work on a variety of construction and heavy equipment, including excavators, wheel loaders, articulated dump trucks, dozers, and other diesel-powered equipment. Essential Responsibilities Diagnose and repair mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and electronic systems on heavy construction equipment. Perform preventive maintenance, inspections, and scheduled services. Troubleshoot diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, aftertreatment systems, and drive systems. Utilize OEM diagnostic software, service information, schematics, and technical resources to accurately identify equipment issues. Perform engine, transmission, hydraulic, electrical, and undercarriage repairs. Diagnose and repair DEF, DPF, SCR, EGR, and other emissions-related systems. Perform component removal and installation, including engines, pumps, motors, cylinders, transmissions, axles, and other major components. Complete equipment inspections and identify additional repair and maintenance needs. Accurately document all work performed on electronic work orders. Record parts, labor, diagnostic information, and equipment hours accurately. Communicate repair findings and recommendations to the Service Manager, Shop Foreman, and/or customers. Perform field service and emergency repairs at customer job sites when required. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment. Properly use and maintain company tools, diagnostic equipment, and service vehicles. Follow all OEM repair procedures, company policies, OSHA requirements, and safety standards. Participate in manufacturer training and continuing technical education. Assist other technicians with difficult repairs and troubleshooting when needed. Perform other duties as assigned by management. Qualifications 3+ years of experience repairing and maintaining heavy construction equipment preferred. Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, and mechanical systems. Ability to diagnose complex equipment problems using electrical and hydraulic schematics. Experience using OEM diagnostic software and electronic service tools. Ability to read and interpret service manuals, wiring diagrams, hydraulic schematics, and technical documentation. Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills. Ability to work independently and manage multiple repair priorities. Valid driver's license required. CDL Class A or B preferred. Welding and fabrication experience is a plus. OEM certifications are preferred but not required. ASE, EVT, or other industry certifications are a plus. Preferred Equipment Experience Experience with one or more of the following is preferred: Excavators Wheel loaders Articulated dump trucks Dozers Motor graders Compact construction equipment Material handlers Crushers and screening equipment Diesel-powered generators Hydraulic equipment Experience with OEM equipment such as Volvo Construction Equipment, Mack, Rokbak, Link-Belt, Komatsu, Caterpillar, John Deere, Hitachi, or similar manufacturers is a plus. Physical Requirements Ability to lift and carry up to 75 pounds. Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, crawl, and work in confined or awkward positions. Ability to safely work around heavy equipment and moving machinery. Ability to work outdoors and in varying weather conditions when performing field service. Ability to work around diesel fuel, hydraulic oil, lubricants, solvents, and other shop materials. Ability to safely operate service trucks, lifts, cranes, and other shop equipment as required.
