Summary:

JOB SUMMARY

Under close supervision assists Journeyman with building, demolition and repairing Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Systems. Performs routine preventative maintenance, work orders and occasional emergency response afterhours work. May perform work in more than one craft discipline a personal skill permits and workload requires.

Responsibilities:

All Conducts preventative maintenance on air handlers, filters, exhaust fans, cold roof fans, heat pumps, chillers, cooling towers, mechanical and refrigeration units. Installs and modifies ductwork and heating and cooling vents in remodeled areas. Identifies, researches and repairs mechanical problems. Monitors systems, including building automation system, energy management, security, and fire protection/ detection systems, pneumatic tube system, and elevator car systems. Responds to service calls or work requests from all areas of the hospital relating to the repair and maintenance of plumbing fixtures, hospital air handling systems, medical gas systems, lighting, and nurse call systems. Corrects problems or refers to another department. Follows safety precautions and procedures in performance of job duties. Orders supplies and materials related to projects and coordinates and schedules contractors and other maintenance workers. Performs other duties as assigned or required. Journeyman HVAC Assistant Assists Journeyman with Troubleshooting and repairing heating, cooling and room pressurization problems, refrigeration units, ice machines, air handlers, humidifiers, heat pumps and chillers. Maintains indoor air quality and differential pressure of rooms according to regulatory standards. Adjusts temperatures and humidity levels accordingly. Installs mechanical equipment as necessary. Performs other duties as assigned. Journeyman HVAC Trains, coaches and directs Journeyman Assistant. Troubleshoots and repairs heating, cooling and room pressurization problems, refrigeration units, ice machines, air handlers, humidifiers, heat pumps and chillers. Maintains indoor air quality and differential pressure of rooms according to regulatory standards. Adjusts temperatures and humidity levels accordingly. Installs mechanical equipment as necessary. Conducts preventative maintenance on air handlers, filters, exhaust fans, cold roof fans, heat pumps, chillers, cooling towers, mechanical and refrigeration units. Installs and modifies ductwork and heating and cooling vents in remodeled areas. Identifies, researches and repairs mechanical problems. Calculates requirements for fan systems and balances fan installations. Senior Journeyman HVAC Trains, coaches and directs Journeyman Assistant and Journeyman.

KNOWLEDGE and SKILLS All Knowledge of operating hand and power tools Knowledge of operating, troubleshooting and maintaining building and grounds equipment. Knowledge of transporting and disposing items of varying compounds, textures or quantities. Knowledge of safety procedures for repair and maintenance. Knowledge of safety precautions when operating motorized vehicles, equipment and hand tools. Skill in operating motorized vehicles, equipment and hand tools. Journeyman HVAC/Senior Journeyman HVAC Ability to explain and instruct effectively. Skill in reading and evaluating blueprints, panel layout sheets and other technical schematics. Skill in using analytical and research ability to define and solve problems. Skill in operating a personal computer utilizing a variety of applications. Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with others.

MINIMUM EDUCATION QUALIFICATION

All A high school diploma or GED equivalent. Progressively responsible professional work-related experience, education, or training may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for college education.

Journeyman / Senior

Journeyman HVAC Completion of a formal certified apprenticeship program typically requiring a combination of 6000 - 8000 hours of education, practice, and/or on-the-job training and leading to a senior journey-level designation. An equivalent amount of education, training, and/or experience may be substituted for the apprenticeship program.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATION

Journeyman HVAC Assistant Non-supervisory - No experience required. Apprentice level craft work experience in the specific trade needed. Journeyman HVAC Non-supervisory - Minimum 2 years experience needed working in the HVAC trade. Senior Journeyman HVAC Non-supervisory - 5 years of skilled craft work experience in the specific trade needed. An equivalent combination of relevant education and/or training may be substituted for experience.

Journeyman HVAC Certificate from an accredited career training program in HVAC technology, or mentorship alongside an experienced technician. Senior Journeyman HVAC Certified HVAC training and 5 years experience as mentoring HVAC mechanic.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

May be required to possess an Alaska driver's license with a clean driving record. Depending on the needs of the organization, some incumbents in this job class may be required to obtain additional certifications or training in one or more specialty areas.
