Job Overview Job Overview Johnny O Mechanical is seeking an experienced HVAC Lead Installer with strong hands-on experience installing heat pumps, air conditioners, furnaces, and dual-fuel systems. This is primarily an installation position, and applicants must be comfortable working with modern heat-pump technology, system controls, electrical wiring, refrigeration piping, nitrogen purging while brazing, evacuation, startup, and proper system commissioning. We need someone with strong problem-solving skills who can evaluate field conditions, make sound decisions, and complete high-quality installations without constant supervision. You must be dependable, detail-oriented, mechanically skilled, and capable of working independently while taking responsibility for the quality of the finished job. Experience with HVAC troubleshooting, diagnostics, service, boilers, hydronics, VRF/VRV, or other HVAC systems is a strong plus, but the ability to correctly install and commission heat pumps, furnaces, air conditioners, controls, and dual-fuel applications is mandatory. Responsibilities Take ownership of HVAC installation projects from initial jobsite review through final startup, commissioning, customer walkthrough, and closeout. Lead installers and helpers in the field, assign tasks clearly, maintain productivity, and ensure work meets company quality standards. Review the job scope, equipment, materials, plans, and field conditions before beginning work and identify potential problems early. Install heat pumps, air conditioners, gas furnaces, evaporator coils, thermostats, controls, and dual-fuel systems correctly and professionally. Complete refrigeration piping using proper brazing practices, including flowing nitrogen while brazing, pressure testing, evacuation, decay testing, charging, and leak verification. Wire and configure conventional and communicating controls, heat-pump thermostats, accessories, and dual-fuel applications. Properly start up and commission every system by verifying airflow, static pressure, temperature split, refrigerant performance, electrical operation, control settings, equipment staging, safety controls, and overall system performance. Diagnose and resolve installation, mechanical, refrigeration, electrical, airflow, and control-related problems without requiring constant supervision. Read and understand installation manuals, wiring diagrams, equipment specifications, mechanical plans, and manufacturer requirements. Maintain accurate job records, including model and serial numbers, startup readings, commissioning measurements, equipment settings, materials used, jobsite photos, and completed work. Communicate professionally with customers, answer questions clearly, protect the customer's property, and explain the completed system and its operation. Keep the work area, company vehicle, tools, and equipment clean, organized, and properly maintained. Follow applicable mechanical, electrical, fuel-gas, refrigeration, safety, and manufacturer requirements. Recognize work outside the original scope and communicate it before proceeding. Complete installations efficiently without sacrificing workmanship, safety, system performance, or customer satisfaction. Experience Proven professional experience as an HVAC lead installer, with the ability to complete residential and light-commercial installations from beginning to end. Strong hands-on experience installing heat pumps, air conditioners, gas furnaces, evaporator coils, thermostats, controls, and dual-fuel systems. Heat-pump and dual-fuel installation experience is mandatory. Must understand proper refrigerant piping and brazing procedures, including continuously flowing nitrogen while brazing to prevent internal oxidation and contamination. Experience performing pressure tests, leak checks, deep evacuations, vacuum decay tests, refrigerant charging, and complete system startups. Must be capable of properly commissioning equipment and verifying airflow, static pressure, temperature split, refrigerant performance, electrical operation, equipment staging, thermostat configuration, and safety controls. Must be able to read and understand installation manuals, wiring diagrams, mechanical plans, equipment specifications, and manufacturer requirements. Strong understanding of low-voltage controls, line-voltage wiring, communicating equipment, thermostats, and heat-pump control sequences. Must possess strong mechanical ability, problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently without constant supervision. Must have strong leadership, organization, recordkeeping, communication, and customer-service skills. EPA Section 608 certification is required; Universal certification is strongly preferred. Valid driver's license and a clean, insurable driving record are required. Must be dependable, punctual, professional, and able to safely operate a company vehicle. Must be physically capable of performing HVAC installation work, including lifting equipment and materials, using ladders, and working in crawl spaces, attics, mechanical rooms, rooftops, and varying weather conditions. HVAC troubleshooting, diagnostics, service, boiler, hydronic, VRF/VRV, zoning, and building-controls experience are strong pluses.
