1. Position Summary The Experienced Commercial/Industrial HVAC Installer is a senior field technician who independently installs, commissions, and troubleshoots complex commercial and industrial HVAC systems — including chillers, VRF/VRV systems, large-capacity air handlers, and rooftop units. This role serves as a technical resource on job sites, reviews project documents for constructability, and mentors Installers and Helpers/Apprentices assigned to the crew. 2. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Independently install, rig, and commission complex commercial and industrial HVAC systems, including chillers, VRF/VRV systems, large air handling units, and RTUs. Review mechanical drawings, submittals, and specifications for constructability and flag issues before or during installation. Fabricate, hang, and seal sheet metal and fiberglass ductwork in accordance with SMACNA standards. Braze, solder, and join copper and steel refrigerant and piping systems, including complex multi-zone and industrial piping configurations. Perform advanced start-up, commissioning, and functional testing; diagnose and resolve complex mechanical, electrical, and control issues. Evacuate, charge, and leak-test refrigerant systems in compliance with EPA Section 608 requirements. Serve as a technical resource for Installers and Helpers/Apprentices; provide hands-on mentoring and quality checks on their work. Coordinate directly with project managers, engineers, and other trades on technical sequencing and system integration. Rig and set heavy equipment using cranes, forklifts, hoists, and other material-handling equipment. Complete and review required documentation, including start-up checklists, commissioning reports, and daily field reports. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe job site; enforce company and OSHA safety requirements among crew members. Operate and maintain company vehicles, tools, and equipment in accordance with KMI Services policy. Participate in on-call rotation and respond to complex service/installation escalations as needed. Perform other duties as assigned. 3. Qualifications 3.1 Education & Experience High school diploma or GED required; completion of a formal HVAC/R apprenticeship or technical program strongly preferred. 5-10 years of hands-on experience installing commercial or industrial HVAC systems required. Demonstrated experience with chillers, VRF/VRV systems, or other complex commercial/industrial equipment required. 3.2 Certifications & Licenses EPA Section 608 Universal Certification required. Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record required. OSHA 30-Hour construction safety certification required. NATE certification preferred. Manufacturer-specific start-up/commissioning certifications (e.g., VRF/VRV, chillers) required or preferred based on assigned equipment. 3.3 Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Advanced knowledge of SMACNA duct construction standards and applicable mechanical and building codes. Expert-level proficiency reading complex mechanical drawings, wiring diagrams, and equipment submittals. Advanced skill in brazing, soldering, and refrigerant piping practices. Solid understanding of electrical control circuits, low-voltage wiring, and building automation/controls interfaces. Strong independent troubleshooting and root-cause problem-solving skills on complex systems. Demonstrated ability to mentor and provide technical direction to less experienced crew members. Strong communication skills with project managers, engineers, and other trades. Reliable, punctual, and safety-conscious work ethic. 4. Physical Demands & Work Environment Regularly lifts and carries equipment and materials weighing up to 75 lbs; occasionally up to 100 lbs with assistance. Frequently works at heights via ladders, lifts, and rooftops; regular confined space entry as required by equipment location. Exposure to extreme temperatures, dust, noise, and outdoor weather conditions on job sites. Extended periods of standing, kneeling, bending, and climbing. Travel to job sites required; some overnight or out-of-town travel may be necessary. Must be able to pass pre-employment and random drug screening and background checks. 5. Tools & Equipment Company-issued and/or personal hand and power tools appropriate for advanced HVAC installation, per KMI Services' Tool Inspection SOP. Refrigerant recovery, evacuation, and charging equipment; gauges, leak detectors, and diagnostic instruments. Brazing and soldering equipment (oxy-acetylene or equivalent). Sheet metal fabrication tools. Material-handling equipment, including forklifts and scissor/aerial lifts (certification provided/required). Manufacturer-specific commissioning tools/software for chillers, VRF/VRV, and controls as applicable. Personal protective equipment (PPE) as required by KMI Services safety policy and job site requirements.

Pay:

$25.00 - $38.00 per hour
