Job Title:
HVAC Service Technician Job Description The HVAC Service Technician performs maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of commercial and industrial HVAC equipment, including air handlers, cooling towers, chillers, and rooftop units (RTUs) across facilities such as hospitals and data centers. This role requires strong technical skills, effective customer communication, and the ability to diagnose issues, complete repairs, and clearly explain work performed and recommended solutions. Responsibilities Perform HVAC service, troubleshooting, and repair on air handlers, cooling towers, chillers, condensers, rooftop units (RTUs), and other HVAC equipment in commercial, industrial, hospital, and data center environments. Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and refrigeration system issues using appropriate tools and electrical testing methods. Communicate directly with customers to understand system problems, listen to concerns, and gather detailed information about issues. Explain proposed fixes, repair options, and recommended maintenance to customers in a clear and professional manner. Complete HVAC repairs and installations according to industry standards, safety guidelines, and company procedures. Service and maintain HVAC systems, including refrigerant-based systems, to ensure optimal performance and energy efficiency. Handle refrigerants in compliance with EPA regulations and best practices, including proper recovery, recycling, and charging. Document work performed, parts used, and findings from troubleshooting and repairs accurately and in a timely manner. Operate and drive a company vehicle safely to and from customer sites. Collaborate with team members and other trades on construction, service, and installation projects as needed. Perform routine HVAC maintenance to prevent breakdowns and extend equipment life. Utilize mechanical and electrical skills to inspect, test, and verify proper operation of HVAC systems and components. Essential Skills Minimum of 3+ years of HVAC service experience, specifically troubleshooting and repairing RTUs, air handlers, chillers, and cooling towers. Proven experience communicating with customers to explain issues, proposed fixes, and completed work. Strong troubleshooting skills for HVAC systems, including mechanical, electrical, and refrigeration components. Hands-on experience with HVAC repair, maintenance, service, and installation in commercial or industrial settings. Proficiency with electrical testing and diagnostics on HVAC equipment. Experience working with refrigerant and refrigeration systems. Valid driver's license with the ability to safely operate a company vehicle. EPA Certification (EPA Universal preferred or equivalent). Ability to work with HVAC equipment such as air handlers, RTUs, cooling towers, chillers, condensers, and boilers (where applicable). Additional Skills & Qualifications Boiler experience is a plus. Experience in commercial, industrial, hospital, or data center environments is beneficial. Experience in construction-related HVAC service and installation is helpful. Strong mechanical aptitude and familiarity with a wide range of HVAC equipment. Solid understanding of electrical systems as they relate to HVAC equipment. Ability to work independently in the field while maintaining high standards of safety and quality. Strong verbal communication and customer service skills. Why Work Here? Work Environment This role is field-based, working primarily in commercial, industrial, hospital, and data center facilities. Technicians travel between customer sites using a company vehicle and work directly on installed HVAC equipment in operational environments. The work involves both indoor and outdoor settings, exposure to mechanical and electrical equipment, and varying temperature conditions depending on the location and task. The position requires adherence to safety protocols and site-specific requirements typical of critical environments such as hospitals and data centers. Job Type & Location This is a Permanent position based out of Ferndale, MI. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $62400.00 - $104000.00/yr.
