Their main duties include locating and diagnosing maintenance problems on equipment and quickly performing emergency repairs on certain equipment items. HVAC Technicians have several responsibilities. The technician's primary duty is to maintain systems or repair them. Other common responsibilities for HVAC Technicians include: Removing old systems Installing new systems Performing routine maintenance Communicating with clients and customers Ordering and maintaining equipment Meeting local HVAC codes Qualifications HVAC system installation, maintenance, and repair expertise with strong electrical diagnostics and refrigeration knowledge Proficient in using hand tools, ohmmeter, and troubleshooting for mechanical and electrical systems Direct client communication, customer service orientation, and field service experience EPA certification and knowledge of safety protocols; ability to read schematics and perform preventive/reactive maintenance
