Job Description

Position Description Reporting to the Director of Plant Operations, the Senior Mechanical Technician acts as a high-level technical lead for campus facilities and equipment, specializing in HVAC and plumbing systems. This person is expected to take a primary role and responsibility in tasks that involve Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, Refrigeration and Plumbing while working individually and as part of a team. This person is classified as essential personnel and is subject to non-exempt personnel policies. Performs essential duties during inclement weather, emergency situations, or as campus needs dictate. This position also performs general maintenance and troubleshooting of the Building Automation Systems. Position Responsibilities Responsible for Preventive Maintenance (PM) work on all equipment, taking a primary role on PM tasks for plumbing & HVAC&R systems and equipment including responsibilities for testing, and maintaining backflow preventers, boilers and related equipment including proper recording and maintenance of all required documentation. Assumes a leadership role in the maintenance, troubleshooting, repairing, monitoring and installing of plumbing and HVAC&R equipment and systems as well as installation and coordination of work utilizing outside contractors and vendors. Executes the maintenance, troubleshooting and repair work on, and evaluation of all equipment and systems as assigned including plumbing; mechanical, and heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment Monitors repairs and troubleshoots boilers, air handlers, pumps, colling towers, drains, package HVAC units, energy management system, sprinkler systems, and water distribution system, sanitary sewer system, etc. Installs plumbing and HVAC equipment for new construction, renovation, repair and remodeling projects. Ensure all work meets Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and university safety regulations. Provides leadership / management for all BAS / Fire Alarm projects, upgrades, repairs, maintenance, and reports on BAS / Fire Alarm functions. Addresses minor/general work requests on assigned low voltage, network communication and electrical equipment and circuitry. As assigned, maintains university vehicle and position related tools and equipment. maintains work areas in the field and int he shop in an orderly and clean manner, maintaining a safe work area. Performs tasks in a safe manner, attending safety training programs and courses as directed. Performs additional duties as instructed by the Director of Plant Operations. Maintains professional growth and development by attending educational, technical and training programs, seminars and courses through self-identification of these opportunities as well as with direction from the Director of Plant Operations. Initiates new work orders for additional work or tasks as observed and identified n the field either as part of routine inspection tours or through observation while completing work orders. Possesses and provides basic, position-related, personal hand tools. Embodies values of caring and compassion, justice and integrity, competence and affirmation. Qualifications The incumbent must possess a strong understanding of HVAC&R and plumbing systems with a general understanding of electrical systems, particularly low voltage, BAS hardware, communication, and networking equipment and distribution. A minimum of a journeyman knowledge of mechanical systems with at least five or more years of total experience in mechanical trades. Experience as a lead mechanic or clear indication of the ability to perform duties a a mechanical crafts man is desired. The incumbent should also possess a working knowledge of BAS Software and mechanical equipment. Experience in leading a mechanical project or a mechanical maintenance team is beneficial. A proven ability to manage the details of several work request projects at the same time. Strong communication skills and a common knowledge for safety are essential. A strong knowledge of Fire Alarm Systems is preferred. The ability to lift and move materials (in excess of 50 pounds) and operate power tools and hand tools in a safe and proper manner. The ability to climb ladders. A current valid drier's license with an exemplary driving record is required. Availability for emergency / on call support is required. Must be flexible and able to work without supervision. Personal hand tools required. In accordance with state laws, Act 73 of 2007, Act 153 of 2014, Act 168 (relating to the Child Protective Services Law), school employees of Eastern University who will have "direct contact with children" must complete the background check process prior to employment. Results must be submitted within ten days of receipt.
