Job Title:
HVAC Technician Job Description This role maintains and repairs HVAC and refrigeration equipment in a fast-paced food production facility, ensuring all systems operate reliably and safely in accordance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), safety requirements, and professional quality standards. The HVAC Technician performs mechanical troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, and repairs on complex systems, including large rooftop units and ammonia-based refrigeration, to keep the facility in an uncompromised state of readiness. Responsibilities Maintain and repair HVAC and refrigeration systems throughout the facility to ensure reliable and efficient operation. Troubleshoot breakdowns, recurring problems, and HVAC electrical controls, and recommend corrective measures to prevent future issues. Utilize testing equipment and diagnostic tools to determine the root cause of mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and control-related problems. Perform preventive maintenance on all facility HVAC and refrigeration systems to keep equipment in sound working condition and minimize downtime. Assist with general facility repairs and maintenance as needed to support overall plant operations. Document all work performed, including repairs, preventive maintenance, and parts usage, in maintenance management software. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area at all times, following Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) and site safety procedures. Install, service, and repair HVAC components, including boilers, air conditioning systems, gas heat equipment, and associated electrical controls. Support troubleshooting and maintenance of ammonia system engine rooms, including compressors, evaporators, and cooling towers. Collaborate with other maintenance team members and plant staff to coordinate work, share technical knowledge, and resolve issues efficiently. Participate in overtime work and respond to emergency on-call situations as needed to support continuous operations. Follow all written and verbal job and safety instructions, including hazardous material labeling and related procedures. Essential Skills Minimum of 5 years of experience in the HVAC technician field. High school diploma or GED. Technical training in HVAC technology. Refrigerant certification. EPA Universal certification. Strong mechanical troubleshooting skills. Experience with hydraulics and pneumatic systems. Experience performing preventive maintenance on HVAC and refrigeration equipment. Knowledge of HVAC systems, electrical controls, and refrigerants, including ammonia. Experience with ammonia system engine rooms, including compressors, evaporators, and cooling towers. Experience with large rooftop HVAC package units, specifically 30 to 50 ton R22 refrigerant systems and gas heat. Ability to use testing equipment and diagnostic tools to identify root causes of equipment issues. Excellent mechanical aptitude, with the ability to pass in-house mechanical aptitude tests. Ability to lift and carry up to 75 pounds. Ability to communicate effectively in English, including reading, writing, and conversing, to follow job and safety instructions and understand hazardous material labeling. Strong troubleshooting, installation, service, and repair experience in HVAC, boilers, and air conditioning systems. Willingness and availability to work overtime and respond to emergency on-call needs. Consistent and reliable attendance. Ability to work both independently as a self-starter and collaboratively as a team player. Ability to effectively communicate and coordinate with staff at all levels. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience with PLCs is a plus. General mechanical knowledge and basic computer operation skills. Experience in fast-paced production or manufacturing environments. Familiarity with maintenance management software for documenting work and parts usage. Experience working within Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) environments. Comfort working in deadline-driven operations. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in documentation and maintenance planning. Why Work Here? The maintenance team consists of approximately 12 people, including management, mechanics, and machine cleaners, fostering a collaborative and supportive atmosphere. Multiple shifts are available, including 1st shift (7:00 am- 3:30 pm), 2nd shift (3:00 pm
- 11:30 pm), and 3rd shift (11:00 pm
- 7:30 am), with a need on 3rd shift.
