Job Description

Commercial HVAC Service TechnicianPosition OverviewThe Commercial HVAC Service Technician is responsible for installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing commercial heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. The role focuses on delivering reliable, codecompliant service to commercial clients, minimizing downtime, and ensuring occupant comfort and safety. The technician will represent the company on site, communicate effectively with customers and team members, and maintain accurate service documentation.

Key ResponsibilitiesPerform diagnostic testing, troubleshooting, and repair of commercial HVAC systems, including rooftop units, chillers, boilers, air handlers, and controls.

Conduct preventive maintenance inspections and tasks according to manufacturer recommendations and company schedules to extend equipment life and prevent failures.

Respond to service calls and emergency breakdowns in a timely manner, prioritizing safety and minimizing business disruption for clients.

Install and commission new commercial HVAC equipment and components, ensuring proper operation and integration with existing systems.

Ensure all work complies with local, state, and federal codes and regulations, including safety, environmental, and building standards.

Document service activities, write clear work orders, complete service reports, and maintain accurate parts and labor records in the company system.

Advise customers on system performance, recommended repairs or upgrades, energy efficiency improvements, and compliance requirements.

Maintain inventory of common parts and tools, coordinate parts ordering, and keep company vehicles and equipment clean and organized.

Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and other technicians to support larger installations, retrofits, and compliance projects.

Provide excellent customer service by communicating findings, explaining technical issues in plain language, and obtaining customer approvals before performing work.

QualificationsTechnical certificate or associate degree in HVAC, refrigeration, or related field preferred.

Minimum of 3 years of hands-on commercial HVAC service experience (technician role) with a strong track record of troubleshooting and repair.

EPA Section 608 refrigerant certification required; additional manufacturer or controls certifications a plus.

Solid knowledge of commercial HVAC systems, controls, electrical systems, pneumatics, and building automation basics.

Familiarity with applicable codes, safety regulations, and compliance standards (local/state building codes, OSHA, environmental regulations).Proficient with diagnostic tools, meters, refrigerant handling equipment, and basic hand/power tools.

Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, wiring schematics, and equipment manuals.

Strong customer service skills, clear verbal and written communication, and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.

Valid driver's license with a clean driving record and the ability to travel to client sites; availability for on-call rotations and occasional overtime.
