TCC is the largest provider of higher education and workforce services in Hampton Roads, enrolling nearly 25,000 students in 2024-25. Founded in 1968 as a part of the Virginia Community College System, Tidewater Community College ( TCC ) services South Hampton Roads with 4 campuses in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach, 7 regional centers and 2 important cultural institutions. The college had 3,399 graduates in 2024-2025, 40 percent of whom pursued degrees that would let them transfer to 4-year institutions. Of South Hampton Roads residents enrolled in higher education 33% enrolled at TCC . TCC's institutional accreditation is affirmed through 2027 by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. This posting is an internal/agency-only posting. Only current Tidewater Community College employees will be considered. The HVAC Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the daily operations, maintenance, repair, and installation of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. The position provides technical and administrative supervision to HVAC staff, ensuring work is performed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with applicable codes, regulations, policies, and established standards. The HVAC Supervisor coordinates preventive and corrective maintenance activities, responds to operational needs, manages resources, and supports the reliable and cost-effective operation of HVAC systems and related equipment. This position is based at the District Office located in Suffolk, VA. However, work will occur at all four TCC locations in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach. This position is designated as essential. The employee may be required to report to work or otherwise fulfill the responsibilities of the position during a college/campus closure resulting from weather, emergency, or other emergent conditions. Special Assignments May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor. KSA's/Required Qualifications
  • Considerable knowledge of principles and practices of maintenance, repair, and replacement of HVAC equipment.
  • Ability to inspect and maintain a variety of equipment to include, but not limited to, air conditioning, boilers, air handlers, fan coil units, pumps, valves, controllers (both DOC and Pneumatic), motors, starters, refrigeration, and automated control systems.
  • Ability to follow verbal instructions and work independently.
  • Ability to work with little or no supervision and make sound decisions independently.
  • Ability to provide supervision to a team of skilled technicians.
  • Proficient in the use of hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools, as well as service manuals and all diagnostic equipment related to the trade.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. on a regular basis. Ability to function in close quarters or cramped environments.
  • Ability to operate all required equipment.
  • Virginia Tradesman Certification
  • Master Level HVAC Mechanic/Gas Fitter.
  • Experience as a Journeyman in air conditioning or heating, ventilation and air conditioning mechanic.
  • Experience in the plumbing /electrical trade (Certification Preferred).
  • Virginia Driver's License
  • Universal Type CFC Recovery License/Certification.
  • CFC Recovery License/Certification
  • Previous supervisory experience.
  • Previous experience with automatic controls/building management and computerized controls. Additional Considerations
  • Certification on operation and maintenance of chillers.
  • Significant hands on experience in mechanical systems.
  • Some experience in working from blue prints and drawings.
