DEFINITION:

Join our dynamic team as a Utility Mechanic I/II/Senior and play a vital role in maintaining and enhancing our city's essential water infrastructure! You'll tackle a variety of hands-on tasks, from servicing and repairing advanced machinery to maintaining our innovative maintenance program. Whether working independently or collaborating with our team, your efforts will directly impact on the health and well-being of our community. This position must work well independently and with teams, while providing excellent, respectful customer service and human relations skills, which support the City of Brighton's mission and values.

Supervision Exercised and Received:

These positions report directly to the Water Treatment Maintenance Supervisor. Utility Mechanic I/II positions do not supervise others. A Senior Utility Mechanic may lead the work of 1-2 maintenance personnel on a project.

QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:

Methods, materials, and tools used in the repair and maintenance of equipment and machinery, including pumps, valves, and motors. Principles and practices of water systems and water treatment. Preventive maintenance techniques related to water systems and water treatment facilities, equipment, and machinery. Safe work practices and procedures. Electrical systems and controls, including troubleshooting and repair. Hydraulic systems and components. Welding and fabrication techniques. Relevant federal, state, and local regulations and standards, including OSHA and EPA guidelines. SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems and their operation. Basic principles of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems. Emergency response procedures for water facilities. Environmental and safety regulations specific to water treatment.

Ability to:

Perform complex and routine maintenance and repair tasks involving pumps, valves, motors, and other equipment. Diagnose and troubleshoot equipment malfunctions and determine appropriate corrective actions. Develop and implement effective preventive maintenance programs and schedules. Operate a variety of tools and equipment safely and efficiently, including welding and fabrication equipment. Accurately read and record data from charts, gauges, and meters. Understand and carry out oral and written directions with clarity and precision. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, and the public. Work independently and as part of a team, demonstrating strong collaborative skills. Communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing. Respond promptly to emergency call-backs on a rotating, on-call schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Maintain detailed records of maintenance activities and equipment performance. Adhere to and enforce safety protocols and personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements. Continuously improve maintenance processes and contribute to a culture of continuous improvement. Provide training and mentorship to junior team members. Manage time effectively and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment. Adapt to changing work conditions and varying priorities. Utility Mechanic I Under supervision, performs basic maintenance and repair of water treatment equipment and facilities. This position assists in troubleshooting, repair, and preventive maintenance of pumps, valves, motors, and other equipment, contributing to the efficient operation of the water treatment division.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Perform routine maintenance and servicing on machinery and equipment (pumps, valves, motors, etc.) Assist in maintaining and preforming preventive maintenance. Troubleshoot and resolve basic mechanical issues. Operate basic tools and equipment, including welding and fabrication tools under supervision. Read and interpret gauges, charts, and meters. Maintain records of work completed. Adhere to safety protocols and procedures. Respond to emergency calls as part of a rotating on-call schedule. Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience Required:

High School Diploma or GED equivalent. Basic mechanical and electrical skills. Basic knowledge of water treatment systems and equipment.

Preferred:

ASSE or ABPA Backflow Prevention Tester Certification2 Certified Well Tester2 Additional training or coursework in hydraulics, pneumatics, or related fields. Utility Mechanic II This level performs more complex tasks in maintaining and repairing water treatment equipment and may work independently on less advanced issues. The role involves assisting with the maintenance and repair of water utility systems, including troubleshooting equipment malfunctions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Perform intermediate-level maintenance and repair of equipment, including pumps, valves, motors, and electrical systems. Assist in diagnosing and troubleshooting more complex mechanical and electrical malfunctions. Maintains and participates in effective preventive maintenance. Provide guidance and mentorship to Utility Mechanic I staff. Ensure compliance with environmental and safety regulations. Maintain accurate records of equipment maintenance and performance.

Education and Experience Required:

High School Diploma or GED equivalent. Two (2) years of experience in water or wastewater treatment operations. Demonstrated proficiency in troubleshooting and repair of water treatment equipment. Colorado Certified Water Professionals (CCWP) Class D Water Treatment certificate, Class I Wastewater Collections, or Class I Water Distribution.1 Basic understanding of SCADA systems.

Preferred:

Possession of Class B CDL ASSE or ABPA Backflow Prevention Tester Certification2 Certified Well Tester2 Additional training or coursework in hydraulics, pneumatics, or related fields.

Senior Utility Mechanic Definition:

The Senior Mechanic can lead maintenance projects, oversee advanced repairs, and ensures the overall reliability of water treatment systems. This position plays a critical role in preventive maintenance program, project leadership, and guiding junior mechanics.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Lead and supervise maintenance projects, providing guidance to lower-level mechanics. Perform advanced troubleshooting and repair of mechanical, electrical, and control systems. Assist in developing comprehensive preventive maintenance plans for all water treatment division equipment. Ensures preventive maintenance is performed on schedule and maintenance records are accurate and up to date. Operate and maintain specialized tools and equipment. Ensure all work complies with environmental and safety regulations. Conduct inspections and approve work performed by contractors. Serve as a technical expert on all maintenance issues. Respond to emergency situations as part of the on-call schedule.

Education and Experience Required:

High School Diploma or GED equivalent. Four (4) years of experience in water treatment operations and maintenance. Advanced mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills. Colorado Certified Water Professionals (CCWP) Class C Water Treatment certificate, Class II Wastewater Collections, or Class II Water Distribution. Advanced knowledge of SCADA systems and control systems. Ability to lead and mentor other staff.

Preferred:

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to work in various weather conditions, including snow, heat, cold, and rain. Regularly required to use hands to touch, handle, or feel; talk or hear; and taste or smell. Frequently required to stand, walk, sit, and reach with hands and arms. Occasionally required to climb ladders or scaffolding, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, high places, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Moderate physical effort required by occasionally lifting and/or moving up to 50 pounds. Ability to lift and carry up to 80 pounds for short distances. Ability to perform repetitive tasks and work in confined spaces. Ability to wear and work in personal protective equipment (PPE), including respirators, for extended periods. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud, with very loud conditions encountered during the operation of some equipment. Ability to work in hazardous environments and respond to emergency situations. Ability to stand and walk for extended periods. Physical dexterity and stamina to perform strenuous tasks for extended periods.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Possession of a valid Colorado Driver's License with safe driving record. Bilingual English/Spanish skills preferred. Ability to complete FEMA IS 100 and IS 700 training within six (6) months of hire.
