Upfitter Job Description This role focuses on upfitting vehicles for specialized use by disassembling and reassembling components, installing equipment according to blueprints, and ensuring all work meets specified requirements and quality standards. You will work with hand and power tools, perform mechanical assembly tasks, and maintain a clean and efficient shop environment while accurately documenting all work performed. Responsibilities Disassemble and reassemble vehicles in accordance with project requirements and established procedures. Install police lights, cages, and other specialized equipment according to blueprints and detailed specifications. Install all required equipment and components to meet customer and regulatory requirements within specified timelines. Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and technical documentation to guide assembly and installation work. Use hand and power tools, as well as mechanical assembly techniques, to complete upfitting tasks safely and efficiently. Perform diagnostic testing and checks to verify that installed equipment functions correctly and meets quality standards. Maintain an organized, clean, and safe shop and work area, including proper storage and care of tools and equipment. Work independently to complete assigned projects, managing time effectively to meet deadlines and production schedules. Maintain accurate records of work performed, including parts used, installation steps, and any issues or changes encountered. Identify and implement efficiencies in processes and workflows to improve productivity and reduce rework. Handle and move parts and equipment safely, including lifting up to 50 pounds as needed. Demonstrate strong attention to detail to ensure high-quality workmanship and consistent results on every vehicle. Essential Skills Proven experience in assembly, upfitting, or automotive work, including assembly and disassembly of vehicles or related equipment. Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings for mechanical assembly and equipment installation. Mechanical aptitude with hands-on experience using hand and power tools for mechanical assembly and repair. Experience with assembly and disassembly processes, including working with mechanical and electrical components. Ability to perform diagnostic testing on installed equipment to ensure proper operation. Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining high-quality standards. Strong attention to detail and accuracy in following instructions, completing tasks, and documenting work. Ability to maintain a clean, organized shop and work area to support safe and efficient operations. Capability to lift and move up to 50 pounds safely and repeatedly as part of daily tasks. Valid driver's license in good standing. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience in automotive upfitting, fleet upfitting, or related auto assembly environments. Experiences in auto repair, mechanical assembly, or similar hands-on technical roles. Familiarity with industrial or auto shop environments and working with vehicles received directly from manufacturers. EVT (Emergency Vehicle Technician) certification is a plus. Experience installing specialized equipment such as lights, cages, or other law-enforcement-related components is advantageous. Ability to identify process improvements and efficiencies in assembly and installation workflows. Why Work Here? Work Environment This position is based in a smaller industrial-style auto shop environment with approximately 20 employees. The facility receives vehicles directly from the manufacturer and focuses on upfitting them within specific timelines before they are delivered to regional customers. The shop can be hot during the summer and cool in the winter, reflecting a typical industrial setting. The role follows a first-shift schedule, working Monday through Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Steel-toe footwear is required for safety, and tools are provided on site. The environment emphasizes hands-on mechanical work, collaboration with a small team, and consistent production timelines in a fast-paced, shop-based setting. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Hammond, IN. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $21.00 - $22.00/hr.
