Job Title:
Shop Hand/Light Mechanic Job Description The Shop Hand supports day-to-day maintenance and repair of vehicles, trailers, and equipment, ensuring they remain safe, reliable, and ready for use. This role combines hands-on mechanical work, basic electrical troubleshooting, and general shop support, with occasional travel to job sites to assist field personnel. Training is provided for candidates who are eager to learn and grow their mechanical skills. Responsibilities Perform oil changes and routine service work on company vehicles, trailers, and equipment. Grease equipment and carry out general preventative maintenance tasks to keep assets in good working condition. Repair vehicle and trailer lighting, including basic electrical troubleshooting for lights, wiring, and trailer connections. Assist with diagnosing mechanical issues on vehicles, trailers, and small equipment, with training and guidance provided. Use hand and power tools safely and effectively to perform maintenance and repair tasks. Read and interpret basic blueprints or diagrams and use a tape measure accurately when required for repairs or fabrication-related tasks. Pick up parts, materials, and shop supplies as needed to support ongoing maintenance and repair activities. Support general shop operations, including cleaning, organizing work areas, and assisting with miscellaneous tasks as needed. Make occasional trips to job sites to support field personnel with equipment and vehicle needs. Follow safety guidelines and best practices while working in the shop and on job sites. Essential Skills Ability to perform or learn basic oil changes and routine service work on vehicles and equipment. Ability to repair or learn to repair vehicle and trailer lighting, including basic electrical troubleshooting. Comfort using hand and power tools in a safe and controlled manner. Basic mechanical aptitude and a willingness to learn how to diagnose mechanical issues. Ability to read a tape measure accurately. Ability to understand and follow basic blueprints or diagrams. Willingness to travel to job sites as needed, including outdoor work environments. Strong work ethic with the ability to support general shop operations and assist with a variety of tasks. Commitment to following safety procedures and maintaining a clean, organized work area. Additional Skills & Qualifications OSHA 10 certification is a plus. Forklift certification is a plus. Basic mechanical experience with vehicles, trailers, or small equipment is preferred. Familiarity with preventative maintenance and routine service work is preferred. Knowledge of basic electrical systems, including lights, wiring, and trailer connections, is preferred. Ability to troubleshoot and diagnose mechanical issues is preferred. Welding or fabrication experience is an advantage. Previous experience working in a shop or construction environment is beneficial. Why Work Here? Work Environment This role involves working primarily in a shop setting with frequent outdoor work and travel, with approximately half of the time spent on the road supporting job sites. You will work around vehicles, trailers, and equipment, using a variety of hand and power tools, and may occasionally work with basic electrical systems and fabrication tools. The environment is active and hands-on, with a focus on safety, organization, and teamwork. You can expect a practical, field-oriented atmosphere where you split time between the shop and outdoor job sites, adapting to varying weather conditions while maintaining safe work practices. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Olathe, KS. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $21.00 - $23.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
