Shipping Specialist Job Description The Shipping Specialist supports safe and efficient plant operations by performing material handling, equipment inspections, minor mechanical repairs, and preventive maintenance in an industrial shipping environment. This role operates a variety of mobile and material handling equipment, assists maintenance and production teams, and ensures shipping activities run smoothly while maintaining high standards of safety, quality, and housekeeping. Responsibilities Perform material handling activities using overhead cranes, front end loaders, forklifts, and other mobile equipment to move, load, and unload materials safely and efficiently. Locate, monitor, and perform field inspections on plant equipment to identify issues, ensure proper operation, and support continuous production. Carry out housekeeping tasks in work areas to maintain a clean, safe, and organized environment. Conduct equipment and process field inspections as part of preventive maintenance duties, documenting findings and reporting concerns. Perform minor mechanical repairs and adjustments on plant and shipping equipment as needed to minimize downtime. Initiate necessary actions on plant equipment as directed, including operating, repairing, cleaning, feeding, and adjusting equipment according to supervisor instructions. Assist maintenance department personnel with repairs, troubleshooting, and other maintenance activities as required. Perform preventive maintenance inspections and check lubrication systems to ensure equipment reliability and longevity. Work on the preheater tower as needed, including operating cardox systems, blasters, and air or water lances, as well as cleaning ducts and vessels and inspecting or troubleshooting related equipment. Assist with laboratory product sampling and related tasks to support quality control and production requirements. Support general production and general labor activities, including machine operation, loading, packing, and production line tasks as needed. Perform construction-related, packaging, inspection, stocking, and warehouse inventory activities, including cycle counts and inventory management. Handle receiving, materials management, shipping, packing, and picking activities to ensure accurate and timely order fulfillment. Operate various machines and mobile equipment safely in accordance with plant procedures and safety standards. Perform visual inspections of materials and products to ensure quality and detect defects or issues. Assist with labeling, assembly, and other material handling activities to support overall plant operations. Use SAP or similar systems to support inventory management, shipping, receiving, and materials tracking. Follow all environmental, health, and safety rules and procedures while working around mechanical equipment and in varying plant conditions. Participate in weekend work, on-call rotations, and off-shift or night assignments as required by production needs. Essential Skills High school diploma. 3-5 years of industrial maintenance experience in a shipping or similar industrial environment. Hands-on experience with material handling activities in an industrial or plant setting. Ability to operate overhead cranes, front end loaders, forklifts, and other mobile equipment safely. Experience performing preventive maintenance, lubrication checks, and basic equipment inspections. Ability to perform minor mechanical repairs and adjustments on plant equipment. Familiarity with general production, machine operation, and shipping processes. Capability to work safely around moving mechanical equipment, elevated noise levels, and varying weather conditions. Strong attention to detail for inspections, sampling, visual checks, and inventory accuracy. Ability to follow safety, environmental, and operational procedures consistently. Willingness to work day shift (7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.) and participate in weekend and on-call rotations as required. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience with SAP or similar systems for inventory management, shipping, receiving, and materials tracking. Warehouse inventory, cycle counts, and inventory management processes. Experience with loading, packing, picking, and packaging in a production or warehouse environment. Familiarity with laboratory product sampling and basic quality control activities. Exposure to construction-related tasks, general labor, and production line operations. Experience with labeling, assembly, and visual inspection of products or materials. Comfort working on structures such as preheater towers and using equipment like cardox systems, blasters, and air or water lances. The position may require off-shift or night work depending on production needs and includes participation in weekend and on-call supervisory or operational rotations. The standard schedule is a day shift from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The work involves hands-on tasks around mechanical equipment, preheater towers, and other plant structures, requiring consistent adherence to safety procedures and use of appropriate personal protective equipment. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Union Bridge, MD. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $24.00 - $24.00/hr.
