Job Description

Role Overview We are seeking a versatile and solutions-driven Mechanical & Applications Engineer to bridge the gap between customer needs and custom automation engineering. In this high-impact role, you will be responsible for evaluating customer automation requirements, developing innovative mechanical system concepts, creating 3D CAD designs in SolidWorks, and crafting detailed technical and financial proposals. You will work closely with our sales team, mechanical/electrical engineering teams, and prospective clients to turn complex manufacturing challenges into turnkey, automated solutions. Key Responsibilities1. Concept & System Design Translate customer manufacturing requirements, product specs, and throughput goals into feasible, reliable automation system concepts. Design initial 3D layout concepts, mechanical assemblies, tooling, and end-of-arm tooling (EOAT) using SolidWorks . Evaluate and select mechanical components, robotics, pneumatics, linear actuators, and motion control hardware to ensure conceptual feasibility. 2. Proposal Engineering & Customer Support Lead the development of comprehensive technical proposals, including scope of work, sequence of operations, conceptual layout drawings, and bill of materials (BOM) estimates. Perform cost estimation for custom fabrication, bought-out components, machining, assembly, and debugging labor. Participate in discovery calls, plant walkthroughs, and proposal presentations as the primary mechanical technical expert. 3. Cross-Functional Collaboration Partner with Sales Account Managers to qualify new project opportunities and establish project budgets/timelines. Hand off awarded projects seamlessly to the Execution Engineering Team, providing detailed concept documentation, design rationale, and risk assessments. Collaborate with controls and electrical engineers to integrate PLC, robotic, and vision systems into unified automation proposals.
Qualifications & Requirements Education:
Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering (BSME), Mechatronics, or equivalent industry experience.
Experience:
2+ years of experience in custom automation design, custom machinery manufacturing, or system integration engineering.
SolidWorks Proficiency:
Advanced skill in SolidWorks 3D modeling, sheet metal, weldments, and complex layout assemblies.
Automation Expertise:
Strong understanding of industrial automation concepts, robotics (FANUC, ABB, KUKA, Universal Robots, etc.), indexing tables, conveyors, sensors, and pneumatic/hydraulic systems.
Proposal & Costing Ability:
Proven track record estimating custom mechanical machinery, fabrication labor, and component sourcing costs.
Communication:
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain complex engineering concepts to non-technical stakeholders. Preferred Skills & Attributes Experience with
GD&T, FEA
analysis, and manufacturability assessments (DFM/DFA). Background in specific automation domains (e.g., assembly, material handling, vision inspection, robotic welding, or packaging). Ability to manage multiple proposal deadlines in a fast-paced custom machine builder environment.
Pay:
$80,000.00 - $120,000.00 per year
