Job Description

The City of Alameda, Public Works Department is seeking to fill one (1) vacancy for Pump Station Assistant (Maintenance Worker II). Under general supervision, performs a variety of journey level skilled or semi-skilled trade work involved in the construction, installation, operations, maintenance and repair of public streets, buildings, structures, facilities, systems, equipment and grounds. Performs other related work as required.

THE PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT
The City of Alameda Public Works Department is the steward of Alameda's public infrastructure, responsible for its design, construction, and maintenance. It is the vision of the agency to become the best trained, most talented and efficient public works department in the entire Bay Area. Come and join our dynamic team to be an integral part of this vision! This is the journey level class in the Maintenance Worker series. Positions in this class perform highly responsible maintenance work and may be responsible for the independent performance of particularly difficult or specialized maintenance work and/or for providing lead direction to subordinate employees. Work in the class is distinguished from that of lower classes by the greater independence with which an incumbent is expected to operate and by the more technical aspects or overall complexity of the work. Incumbents are able to perform the full range of duties assigned with only occasional instructions or assistance as unusual or unique situations arise and are fully aware of operating policies and procedures. Assignment specialties may include carpentry, plumbing, concrete work, or street, sewer, waste and storm water systems, electrical, or tree and landscape maintenance work. Actual responsibilities will vary according to assignment. Work may be performed under supervision, independently or with the assistance of helpers.

Essential Duties Performs journey-level skilled or semi-skilled construction, maintenance and repair work; may perform general construction and street maintenance repair work. Operates and maintains construction and maintenance equipment for a variety of construction and maintenance operations involving public facilities, streets, sidewalks, gutters, and waste and storm water systems; operates and maintains a variety of other equipment and tools including compressors or pneumatic tools. Installs signs, traffic cones and barricades. Performs rough and finished carpentry. Performs skilled electrical repair and maintenance work related to public buildings, traffic signals, waste and storm water systems, and other public facilities or operations. Paints building surfaces, furniture, fixtures, signs, traffic control lines, etc. Installs and repairs plumbing fixtures. Operates and maintains a variety of waste and storm water systems pumps; cleans, excavates and/or repairs waste and storm water systems pipes. Removes, forms, pours and finishes concrete. Maintains sprinkler and irrigation systems and equipment. Prunes and maintains trees and landscaped areas. Maintains supplies, work records and logs. Reads and interprets blueprints, specifications, maps and drawings. Drives and operates heavy trucks and specialized vehicular equipment. May provide lead direction and training for subordinate employees.
Other Duties:
Assists in troubleshooting, constructing, installing, repairing and servicing industrial equipment such as pumps, motors, valves, gauges, controls, metering equipment, level indicators and other equipment. Assists in installing, maintaining, repairing and replacing all the piping and pumping systems which serve the sewer lift stations and storm pump stations. Performs unskilled and semi-skilled routine maintenance troubleshooting and major repairs as required at the sewer lift stations and storm pump stations. Responds to emergency situations or calls out on an on-call basis. Performs related duties as assigned.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is primarily performed outdoors on City streets with regular exposure to varying weather conditions including heat, cold, rain, wind, and humidity. Frequent exposure to electrical and mechanical hazards, noise, dust, and fumes. Travel by City vehicle within City limits to City work sites, locations, and meetings to conduct work. May work alone or in proximity to others depending on task assignments. Required to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) as needed for various tasks. Subject to occasional emergency call-outs, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Must possess physical strength and stamina to perform moderate to heavy physical labor for extended periods. Standing, walking, bending, stooping, crouching, climbing ladders, kneeling, and reaching overhead or below the waist. Lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling tools, equipment, and materials typically weighing up to 50 pounds; heavier lifting may be required with assistance. Seeing to inspect detailed work and read instructions, gauges, or electronic displays. Dexterity of hands and fingers coordination to operate hand and power tools, computer equipment, and precision instruments. Hearing and speaking to hear alarms, signals, or verbal instructions in a noisy environment. Ability to work in confined spaces and outdoors in varying weather conditions. Education/Experience Any combination equivalent to education and experience likely to provide the required knowledge and abilities. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Education:
High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent.
Experience:
Two years of skilled public works, facilities or equipment maintenance or construction trades experience.
Desirable:
Experience with the maintenance of sewer and/or storm systems, plumbing experience, or entry level underground construction. Knowledge Knowledge of modern practices, procedures, equipment and tools used in journey level skilled trade work and in related construction and maintenance; safe work practices and procedures. Ability Ability to perform a variety of journey level skilled construction, maintenance and repair work including carpentry, plumbing, electrical and concrete work, tree and landscape maintenance, traffic painting, sign maintenance, and waste and storm water systems; operate heavy trucks, specialized vehicular equipment, and other related tools and equipment; perform technically sophisticated and highly complex maintenance related work; read and interpret blueprints, maps and drawings; use spray equipment and restricted chemicals; maintain accurate records; communicate effectively; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the general public; provide lead direction and training to subordinate employees. Special Requirements Willingness and ability to respond to after-hours emergency calls as required. Other Requirements Possession of a valid California Driver's License and satisfactory driving record as a condition of initial and continued employment. Employees hired after June 1, 1996, and assigned to the
Public Works Department:
Possession of a valid Class B State of California driver's license (or the ability to obtain within six months of appointment) and a satisfactory driving record as conditions of initial and continued employment. Employees required to have a Class B driver's license or in positions requiring a Hazardous Materials Endorsement are subject to provisions of the Department of Transportation's drug and alcohol testing program. Selection Process The examination process may include an application and supplemental questionnaire evaluation, a written exam, a practical exam, and an oral interview. The examination process may test for, but is not limited to, the essential knowledge and abilities listed in the job specification and announcement and will be designed to provide a comprehensive review of each candidate's technical knowledge and overall suitability for the position. Qualified applicants will be notified of the exact date, time, and location of examinations approximately two weeks in advance. Candidates passing all components of the examination process will be placed on an Eligible List. A list of names is certified to the department(s) having vacancies based on the type of examination conducted pursuant to the provision of the City's Civil Service Rules. Final selection will be made from the Eligible List by the Department Head subject to approval by the City Manager. The Department Head may utilize additional selection procedures to make a final hiring decision. Placement on an Eligible List does not guarantee employment. Prior to appointment, a thorough reference check will be conducted which may include a credit check and background. The selection process may be evaluated and revised based on the number of qualified applicants. Federal law requires that prior to employment, you must furnish proof of your identity and eligibility for employment in the United States, as required by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. E-Verify The City of Alameda utilizes the Federal government's E-Verify program and new employees must provide documentation to establish both identity and work authorization, which includes showing a valid United States Social Security card at the time of hire (photocopies not accepted). Veteran's Preference Credit A job applicant qualifies as a veteran if honorably discharged from active military, reservist, or National Guard duty of at least 18 consecutive months within the past five (5) years of the date of application. In case of discharge attributable to service-connected injuries or illnesses, the 18 months active-duty requirement need not be fulfilled. An applicant claiming veteran's preference credit must attach to their application, a legible copy of their DD-214 verifying the type of discharge and date(s) of active service.
