SUMMARY:
The Maintenance Worker is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, sanitary, orderly, and well-maintained environment throughout organizational facilities. This position performs routine custodial duties, including cleaning and sanitizing buildings, removing trash, setting up and breaking down rooms and equipment for events and activities, and performing basic maintenance, repairs, and general handiwork. The Maintenance Worker identifies and addresses routine maintenance, repair, and safety concerns while helping ensure facilities, equipment, and property are clean, safe, functional, properly maintained, and ready for daily operations, events, and activities.
Responsibilities:
Because all St. Nicholas Catholic Church employees represent the Roman Catholic Church, they are expected to conduct themselves according to the goals and mission of the Church in performing their work. The position of Maintenance Worker consists of some or all of the following duties: Cleaning and Custodial Services Clean and sanitize offices, restrooms, classrooms, meeting rooms, hallways, common areas, kitchens, and other facility spaces. Sweep, mop, vacuum, scrub, wax, and polish floors as required. Dust furniture, fixtures, equipment, windowsills, and other surfaces. Clean windows, mirrors, glass doors, and partitions. Empty trash and recycling containers and dispose of waste properly. Replenish restroom and facility supplies, including soap, paper towels, toilet tissue, and cleaning products. Maintain cleanliness and sanitation standards throughout assigned areas. Help ensure school areas are properly secured, clean, and ready for the next day's activities. Facility Support Assist with room setups and breakdowns for meetings, events, and special programs. Move furniture, equipment, and supplies as needed. Ensure rooms are properly arranged and returned to their designated condition after use. Work with the Facilities Manager to prioritize setup and takedown requests. Perform routine inspections of assigned areas to identify cleaning, maintenance, or safety issues. Report maintenance needs, equipment malfunctions, safety hazards, and repair requests to the appropriate supervisor. Assist with basic facility upkeep duties as assigned. Perform routine maintenance, repairs, and general upkeep of parish and school facilities, equipment, and property. Respond promptly to maintenance requests and facility-related issues throughout the Parish campus. Assist with basic plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, drywall, furniture, fixtures, and other general repairs. Assist with HVAC-related needs, including reporting problems and performing basic maintenance as directed. Assist with preventative maintenance and projects designed to keep buildings, equipment, and facilities in good working condition. Maintain and properly use tools, equipment, and maintenance supplies. Notify the Facilities Manager of significant repairs, safety concerns, or issues requiring specialized work or outside contractors. Grounds and Exterior Maintenance Maintain cleanliness of building entrances, sidewalks, parking areas, and outdoor common spaces. Remove litter and debris from grounds. Assist with landscaping-related tasks as needed, including watering, weeding, trimming, and general cleanup. Help maintain outdoor furniture, fixtures, trash receptacles, and other exterior areas. Assist with seasonal tasks such as leaf removal, minor landscaping support, and weather-related cleanup as assigned. Safety and Compliance Follow established cleaning procedures and safety standards. Properly use, store, and dispose of cleaning chemicals and supplies. Operate custodial equipment safely and according to manufacturer guidelines. Comply with all organizational policies, safety regulations, and applicable health standards. Immediately report accidents, unsafe conditions, or security concerns. Report unsafe conditions, facility damage, security concerns, leaks, equipment failures, or other potential hazards to the Facilities Manager. Assist with ensuring doors, gates, windows, and other areas are properly secured when required. Customer Service Interact courteously and professionally with employees, visitors, tenants, students, parishioners, and vendors. Respond appropriately to custodial requests and service needs. Maintain confidentiality regarding organizational operations and occupants. Other Duties Assist the Facilities Manager with special projects, repairs, renovations, and other facility-related tasks. Maintain an inventory of commonly used maintenance and janitorial supplies and notify the Facilities Manager when supplies need to be replenished. Attend required training meetings. Assist with emergency cleanup needs. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications High school diploma, GED, or equivalent preferred. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to work independently and complete assigned tasks. Reliable attendance and punctuality.
Preferred:
Practicing Roman Catholic Previous custodial, janitorial, housekeeping, or facilities experience preferred. Experience in educational, healthcare, religious, commercial, or nonprofit environments. Knowledge of proper cleaning methods, materials, and equipment. Familiarity with floor care equipment and custodial best practices. Basic knowledge of workplace safety requirements.
Bilingual:
Spanish Work Conditions The position primarily involves work on a parish campus and in an office setting, requiring frequent use of field equipment such as maintenance and groundskeeping tools and equipment, ladders and lifts, and standard office equipment such as computers, telephones, printers, credit card terminals, postage machines, and filing systems. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required to support department programs, operational needs, or parish events. Must be available to adjust the work schedule as needed to meet organizational deadlines, operational demands, ministry activities or special projects. Regular interaction with students, volunteers, staff, faculty, and visitors in a professional and faith-based environment. Some local travel may be required for meetings, trainings, or work-related events. Physical Requirements Ability to remain seated for extended periods while performing administrative and computer-based tasks. Frequent walking, standing, and movement around the parish campus or office facilities to support programs and operational needs. Ability to work from ladders, elevated platforms, and confined spaces as required. Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials weighing up to 50 pounds, such as supplies, and event equipment. Manual dexterity required for operating tools, maintenance equipment, office equipment, preparing materials, and managing paperwork. Visual acuity sufficient to inspect facilities, equipment, and maintenance work. Visual and auditory ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, students, and visitors in person, via email, and by phone. Must be able to set up and dismantle chairs, tables, and other equipment required for meetings, programs, or campus activities as needed.
