JOB SUMMARY
The City of Montebello is looking for a skilled and detailed-oriented Maintenance Worker to join the Streets Division of the Public Works Department. There is currently one (1) full-time vacancy in the Streets Division of the Public Works Department. The selection process will consist of any combination of application evaluation, written exam, oral panel interview, and department interview. The Selection List established from this recruitment maybe used to fill any current or future vacancies within the City of Montebello if the vacancy occurs before the Selection List expires. Candidates selected for this position are subject to a one-year probationary work period. Under general supervision, to perform a wide variety of unskilled to semi-skilled tasks in maintenance, repair, and upkeep work on streets and sewers, and other public works facilities; to operate trucks and other motorized equipment; and to perform related work as required such as janitorial assignments. This is an experienced working level classification in the maintenance of streets. Incumbents are expected to perform a variety of maintenance, repair, and construction assignments with minimal supervision and training. Also, they are expected to perform basic operations assignments with the City's motorized public works equipment.
WORK CONDITIONS
Work shifts typically start at 6:30 am. However, incumbents in this position are required to work on a rotation shift or maybe required to be on Standby, which means incumbents can be contacted during an emergency after working hours, during the weekend, and holidays. Incumbents in this position must be available to work weekend shifts. Work shifts may vary based on the needs of the City of Montebello and the Public Works Department.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Perform asphalt patching, pothole repair, and pavement maintenance. Install, replace, and maintain traffic signs, street markings, and striping. Remove debris from rights-of-way. Operate vehicles and equipment including trucks, loaders, backhoes, and power tools. Complete daily work orders, logs, and reports while following all safety rules. Incumbents may be assigned to perform duties described in one of the following paragraphs; May expect to be occasionally assigned to perform duties in other units when workload and other conditions dictate.
Streets:
Perform preventative maintenance on streets, sidewalks, curbs and gutters, traffic signs and delineation. Performs emergency work during storms, including clearing debris from roads and drainage structures and placing sandbags. Drives automotive equipment to work sites, which may include combination truck units with trailers of 6,000 pounds gross vehicle weight. Operates such equipment as skip loaders, forklifts, mowers and weed eaters. Operate pressure washer for graffiti removal and perform graffiti removal services. Perform and assist in the installation of proper lane closures and traffic control. Maintain accurate logs, records, and reports as required.
Trees:
Assists in the planting, trimming, spraying, and removal of trees; trims, plants, transplants, irrigates, cultivates and maintains trees; uses hand and power tools, rigging equipment, aerial truck, stump grinder, chainsaws, brush chippers, sprayers and other equipment; may mow, edge and maintain grass; rakes, gathers, loads and hauls leaves and refuse; insures that park and parkway areas have a clean and neat appearance; assists in application of herbicides, pesticides and fertilizers as directed; polices park and parkway areas for trash; performs routine maintenance to assigned tools and equipment; assists with Citywide graffiti, litter, and weed abatement; performs a variety of seasonal duties.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION

Methods, tools, and equipment used in municipal public works maintenance, repair, and construction work. Characteristics, operation, and maintenance of motorized public works equipment and vehicles. Sprinkler system design and installation practices.
Safe work practices Ability to:
Performs a wide variety of public works maintenance, repair, and construction assignments. Operate vehicles and motorized public works equipment. Use hand and power tools skillfully. Perform heavy physical labor requiring strength, dexterity, and agility. Understand and carry out oral and written directions. Read and write at the level required for successful job performance. Maintain good public relations with people contacted during work assignment. Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
