A Maintenance Helper or Assistant assists maintenance mechanics. Repairs and maintains equipment and machines, such as cars or heating systems. May assemble or adjust machines as directed by a head mechanic.
Overview Join our dynamic team as a Ditch Maintenance / Ditch Tender, where you'll play a vital role in ensuring the integrity and functionality of water systems, underground utilities, and pipeline infrastructure. This energetic position offers the opportunity to work outdoors in diverse environments and utilize hand tools to maintain and repair critical infrastructure. Your expertise will help keep water systems flowing smoothly and utilities safely operational, contributing to community safety and service reliability.
Primary Responsibilities:
Under direct supervision of the O&M Superintendent, performs a variety of semi-skilled and basic tasks in the construction, repair, and routine maintenance of District facilities, including canal control structures and turnouts, pipelines, culverts, and other such water conveyance facilities. Duties Assists in construction tasks involving wood materials and basic carpentry work; assists in concrete construction and structure repairs; performs general maintenance tasks including trench work, hand tool use, painting, and steel fabrication; repairs leaks in pipelines and culverts; performs canal maintenance tasks including debris/weed removal, bank protection and restoration, and weed spraying; operates some light equipment (e.g., dump truck, wheel tractor); assists in field repairs of light equipment; services low-lift pumps; establishes and maintains safe working environment in excavation, scaffolding, light/heavy equipment usage, and other construction elements involving hazardous conditions, and additional duties as prescribed by Management. Education and Experience Graduation from high school is desirable but sufficient work-related experience can substitute therefor. Knowledge and Skills Skills in the use and application of hand tools and miscellaneous small equipment; skills in the preparation, placement and finish work in concrete slabs, walls, foundations and footings; skills in basic steel fabrication; knowledge of basic safety considerations in working around equipment and machinery, excavated areas, and water facilities; ability to work effectively with other maintenance workers in a team-oriented fashion
