A Maintenance Helper or Assistant assists maintenance mechanics. Repairs and maintains equipment and machines, such as cars or heating systems. May assemble or adjust machines as directed by a head mechanic.
The City of Galesburg seeks interested applicants to fill one full-time Maintenance Worker position in the Streets Division of the Public Works Department. This permanent, overtime-eligible, bargaining unit position has a starting hourly rate of $24.84 (Step A). The pay range for this position is $24.84 (Step A) to $31.79 (Step K).
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under general supervision, performs manual semi-skilled or skilled work in the maintenance of various park and recreation facilities, including athletic fields, swimming pools, golf course and other park areas. Operates various types of tools and equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Maintains the athletic fields in assigned City parks to include (but not limited to): baseball, soccer, volleyball, roller blade, and tennis courts, and the Bunker Links Golf Course. Sprays various herbicides and insecticides as required. Diagnoses turf, pest, and aquatic problems at City parks, recreational fields, and lakes. Operates a variety of automotive and heavy equipment, including (but not limited to): pick-up trucks, dump trucks, bucket trucks, trash compactor trucks, back-hoes, front-end loader, and snow blower/auger truck. Operates and maintains small tools and equipment, to include (but not limited to): front-end mowers, chain saws, stump grinders, chipper, jack hammer, string line trimmers, cement saws, and walk-behind snow blowers. Install and maintain playground equipment. Mow and maintain approximately 800 acres of parks, cemetery, golf course, and airport. Assist with preparation and clean-up of Special Events in the parks and downtown areas. Maintain the fish population in Lake Storey and coordinate activities with the State Conservation Department. Maintain three chlorinated pools, to include testing, vacuuming, and record keeping. Perform minor repairs, winterization, and start-up of various parks, to include (but not limited to): wading pools, restrooms/shower facilities, and water fountains.
EDUCATION
High school diploma required.
WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIRED A
working knowledge of Illinois traffic laws and experience in safe operation of trucks and motor equipment. Experience in construction, park maintenance or related work. A working knowledge of the tools, methods and materials typically used in park maintenance and/or landscaping operations.
PERSONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND ABILITY A
valid Illinois Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required to apply, and an air brake endorsement is required within 90 days of appointment. The CDL must be maintained as a condition of employment. An Illinois Public Pesticide Applicator or Operator license is required within 1 year of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment. To carry out assignments with little supervision.
